New SNAP rules explained: 6 more states restrict purchases of processed 'junk' foods

Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced this week that six additional states had been granted waivers allowing them to prohibit Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program benefits from being used on certain processed foods and drinks.

Kennedy joined U.S. Food and Drug Administration Commissioner Dr. Marty Makary and Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins on Monday as Rollins signed the six new waivers, which allow the states to amend what the food assistance benefits -- colloquially referred to as food stamps -- can be used for at the grocery store.

Well I guess the soda and snack(potato chips, etc.) industry are losing their government subsidies, like the media companies did with USAID being gone.

I’m sure some grocery stores will go out of business but country is saturated with food stores so shouldn’t be a big deal.

I have seen welfare queens walk in a store with their spawn in tow and the kids grab chips, candy bars and soft drinks and QWEEN uses her SNAP card to pay for it.

Mind you, these were luxuries my parents couldn’t afford to purchase for us when they were working a full time job each.

Corner stores will go out of business. Grocery stores will be fine. Food “deserts” will still be there due to client theft.

This is OK, I guess. But they need to start restricting who can get Food Stamps. Under Obama, eligibility was expanded to include the Middle Class and that was never cut back. Way too many people are eligible and use Food Stamps as a subsidy rather than needing them because they could not eat without them.

When the #1 health risk for your poor population is OBESITY rather than starvation, then some major changes are clearly needing to be made.

Food “deserts” will still be there

One of the modern terms that outrages me the most... they're defined by having zero grocery stores within ONE FREAKING MILE!!! Virtually every man, woman and child on earth can walk a mile to get food. Most humans can walk ONE MILE in less than 18 minutes. For those few who cannot, especially in urban areas, there are plentiful modes of transportation, including taxis, Ubers, buses, friends with cars, DoorDash, charitable organizations, etc.

Oh, and the definition literally excludes small grocers... it is only for large grocery chains and supermarkets.

Of course they mention sugar without noted possible links between the artificial sugars and diabetes or cancer. My wife has medical issues, she can drink Mexican Coke or so called throwback sodas that use real cane sugar. She cannot eat or drink anything that uses the fake chemical sweeteners. My doctor told us to read the ingredients. Avoid any product with a laundry list of ingredients. They are loaded with chemicals and artificial sugars. Wife drinks a Mexican Coke, blood sugar is stabile. She drinks an American Coke it spikes, go figure.

I don’t understand. Apparently a total of 12 states have applied for waivers so they can restrict the items allowed (soda/candy) in their state. Why doesn’t the federal department that oversees the SNAP program just make the changes in all 50 states? If it is up to the state to apply for a waiver then the leftist states will never do it. Makes no sense to me.

Excerpt:

The new waivers will restrict the purchase of so-called “junk food” with SNAP funds in Texas, Oklahoma, Louisiana, Colorado, Florida and West Virginia starting in 2026.

Arkansas, Idaho, Indiana, Iowa, Nebraska and Utah were granted similar waivers for SNAP reform earlier this year ...

Of the 12 states that have been granted SNAP waivers so far, most will restrict the use of SNAP funds on purchases of soft drinks or sodas, and at least eight restrict the use of SNAP funds on candy purchases. Some also prohibit food benefits from being used on purchases of energy drinks and, in Arkansas, the purchase of “fruit and vegetable drinks with less than 50% natural juice ...

Additionally, Florida will prohibit SNAP funds from being used on purchases of “prepared desserts,” and Iowa will restrict the purchase of “all taxable food items as defined by the Iowa Department of Revenue except food producing plants and seeds for food producing plants.” This includes items like candy, certain ready-to-eat snacks, soft drinks and gum.

An economic question? Will the “junk food” companies lower their prices or raise them due to the loss of government subsidies.

What is the point of only restricting soda and candy but not restricting sugary cereals, ho hos, etc?

Looks like this is all most of the states are restricting.

In addition to their health benefits, the new restrictions remind recipients that government help leads to government control.
