Britain planning attack on shadow fleet, Kremlin claims
The Telegraph ^ | 04 August 2025 | Memphis Barker and Joe Barnes

The Kremlin has accused Britain of preparing “mass raids” to sink ships in the Russian shadow fleet.

The SVR, Moscow’s foreign intelligence service, claimed that London was plotting attacks on the fleet of old tankers used to avoid sanctions on oil exports.

The attacks would be designed to look like accidents, the SVR said, so that Britain and the West could claim that the ships were a danger, and move to restrict their movement.

“British intelligence services are planning to use Nato allies to launch a mass raid on the ‘shadow fleet’; for this purpose, an ecological catastrophe in international waters is being prepared,” the SVR report claimed.

The report suggested that Britain planned to commission Ukrainian special forces to sink a vessel in “one of the bottlenecks of sea communication”.

However, the report is likely to raise concerns that Russia is preparing its own “false flag” – an operation designed to look like an attack on them – in order to deter the West from further crackdowns on the shadow fleet.

Experts warn that many of the vessels in the fleet are hardly sea-worthy, sparking concerns that one could easily sink and cause a massive oil leak.

The British navy doesn’t have the ships to do a mass anything.

“The British navy doesn’t have the ships to do a mass anything.”

They still have a few, but they’ll get spanked and quickly GET THE MESSAGE (or if they don’t get the message, it won’t matter, since they will no longer have a navy).

Funny, also, that they don’t seem capable of sinking any of the 100 or so migrant boats that show up on their shores every day.

They have arguably the best Special Forces in the world and excellent submarines. What Russia is implying, in my opinion, is that Britain will pull up a submarine a few miles away from an anchored shadow tanker at anchor. SAS guys will disembark, and swim over via mini sub, plant explosives, set the timer to about 24 hours and be long gone before it explodes.

Yes of course. Its obvious

MI6 will bomb the ships. Ukraine will claim responsibility

That’s how the rump UK empire continues to promote its interests.

Its sad that Donald Trump is playing along with their game.

Britain should worry less about Russian ships, and more about the boats that are dumping hundreds of illegals on British shores every day.

Side note to Prime Minister Starmer:
I’m just expressing my private opinion here. Please don’t issue an international warrant for my arrest.

Seems to me like they’re saying the ships are behind in maintenance but they’re going to blame anything that goes wrong on England.

Not long ago I read a short article written by a former SAS guy. He said that these days the troops often have to buy their own personal equipment. And that’s because there’s no money allocated for such purposes.

Maybe that’s an exaggeration. But I doubt if such an article would have been written a few decades ago

The Ukrainians might try taking the ships out.

Be aware the oil might be purely private civilian property by the time it is in a ship.

The US government auctions off potential oil fields. The US government gets the oil field money before the well is drilled. State governments typically collect royalties.

Destroying private property in private commerce might be considered a war crime, much as burning down a Giant Food market that wives of Pentagon employees shop at.

I’m not a lawyer, an international law or law of war professional.

The UK is not what it was 20 years ago.

Right now, the UK is a weird hybrid version of an elitist political class and their labour supporters who are woke liberals or migrants.

Previously, the UK had a social contract. All British subjects gave up their powers to the state. In return, the state will provide them for protection. For the longest period of time, the state was benevolent (Winston Churchill, Margaret Thatcher).

Be aware that two can play at a game.

The Russians can start taking out oil tankers serving the UK & EU.

It may come to a point where cars in Moscow have gas and cars in London don’t.

Most Russians have never gotten gasoline sourced via an oceangoing ship.

If a tanker headed to China with oil already paid for by a Chinese entity has a problem, China will see to it that some nation has a problem too.

The Chinese navy will escort vessels if necessary.

The Chinese have a shipbuilding capacity far superior to that of NATO countries.
