Aug 4 (Reuters) - The revisions to previous estimates of the size of U.S. payrolls gains for May and June that prompted President Donald Trump to fire Bureau of Labor Statistics Commissioner Erika McEntarfer on Friday were by any measure extraordinarily large.
Indeed, the combined downward revision for the two months of 258,000 was the largest - outside of those during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic - since at least 1979.
FIRST REVISION
The monthly nonfarm payrolls report, released typically on the first Friday of each month, includes an initial estimate of employment changes for the immediately preceding month and revisions to the earlier estimates for the prior two months. BLS makes the revisions because more survey responses come in over the ensuing weeks and because it updates the seasonal factors affecting each month's estimates.
The BLS on Friday said 133,000 fewer jobs had been created in June than first estimated. Over the last several years, the first estimate of the net change in payrolls each month has been revised lower more often than not.
It has been revised down in eight of the last 12 BLS reports over the last year.
The downward revision on Friday was the largest since the first estimate of payrolls gains for March 2021, published in April 2021, was revised down by 146,000 a month later. Over the last three years through June, the median estimate revision was -10,000. That contrasts with a median increase of 8,000 during the decade before the pandemic and a median increase of 2,000 over the series history since 1979.
SECOND REVISION
The total for May's payroll gains was revised lower by 125,000 in Friday's report, when the third estimate for payrolls...

At least we won’t need any rate cuts.
She pulled the same stunt under Biden..before the election she said that Biden had created millions of jobs, after the election she said “Oopsie, I made a boo boo it was actually a lot less so Im revising it down”
As I said before, either she was suffering from TDS or grossly incompetent. Estimation has upper and lower bound. Those numbers are way outside the bounds.
They may use wrong model (that give disproportionate weights), or problematic sample design.
Her incompetence cost her the job.
Did I miss the Reuters liberal bias? This article was mostly factual, as far as I could tell.

I think this is incorrect. The revisions of 800K lower noted by Trump for the election were made in September, not November. So lower jobs were reported pre election, not post.
Maybe they should give up on the estimate game and just publish the factual data that they actually have.
It’s child’s play to rig statistics, hence the saying- there are lies, damn lies and statistics. It’s as fraudulent as beginning an argument with “the experts agree that blah blah blah”. Who are these alleged experts who are never identified, nor are the studies they rely on?
Monthly BLS report is based on a voluntary survey! Only 60% of businesses even bother to respond, and who knows how accurate the data is for those who do. Typical government fiasco..
What fun would that be?
I’m delighted to see that Orly Taitz’s work re Obama is still ongoing. I want to see everything finally come out. I hope enough crucial evidence remains. No one is above the law.
Her new gig will be quality control for an airline, signing off that the planes are sort of, in a way, close to being safe to fly.
I read the revision and thought they had transposed the numbers of jobs created vs the reductions. It should be impossible to make such a mistake or change with only a one paragraph lame explanation.
Integrity? Where?

Don’t know if he’s still around
Do you think an insurance company would put up with the incompetence that she demonstrated?
Aww. She could learn to code maybe.
