India Will Buy Russian Oil Despite Trump’s Threats, Officials Say
New York Times ^ | 08/04/2025 | Mujib Mashal

Indian officials said on Saturday that they would keep purchasing cheap oil from Russia despite a threat of penalties from President Trump, the latest twist in an issue that New Delhi thought it had settled.

The defiance of Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government reflected increasing frustration with a relationship that was once much praised but has been souring rapidly. There is a growing sense in India that its leaders should not allow increasingly volatile American policymaking to shape its choices on vital energy supplies for its huge population, 1.4 billion people.

Mr. Trump said last week that as part of his latest round of tariffs, he would impose an unspecified penalty on India in addition to a tariff rate of 25 percent if the country did not cut off its imports of Russian crude oil. On Friday, he appeared to echo reports of a recent dip in the arrival of Russian oil to India.

“I understand that India is no longer going to be buying oil from Russia,” he told reporters. “That’s what I heard. I don’t know if that’s right or not. That is a good step. We will see what happens.”

On Saturday, two senior Indian officials said there had been no change in policy. One official said the government had “not given any direction to oil companies” to cut back imports from Russia.

At a news conference a day earlier, Randhir Jaiswal, the spokesman for India’s foreign ministry, declined to address Mr. Trump’s threat directly. But he suggested there would be no change of policy regarding Russia.

“Our bilateral relationships with various countries stand on their own merit and should not be seen from the prism of a third country,” Mr. Jaiswal said. “India and Russia have a steady and time-tested partnership.”

President Trump should reciprocate by cancelling the entire H1-B program for Indians in the US.

Long overdue anyways.

Wonder how quickly that attitude would change if we slammed the door 100% shut on H1-Bs for Indian nationals the foreseeable future.

We should anyway, but it is a good point of leverage at the moment here.

Apparently, they are paying in rupees. Russia is holding tens of billions in rupees.

H1-B should be immediately ended regardless of any pretext.

India has a blocked currency.

If you sell stuff to Indians, you must use the money obtained to buy stuff from India.

After selling oil to India, Russia can buy Indian-made stuff like clothing, spices, tea, manufactured goods and services.

There are CNC machine tool makers in India: Jyoti, LMW, Cosmos, AceMicromatic, etc.

(China & India way behind on chip making)

The Russian economy is pretty much more advanced than that of India.

If Trump cuts off the Indian market for Russian oil Moscow women might not be able to buy curry spices.

It's working out very well for India.

Access to cheap oil is for more beneficial than any tariffs or sanctions are harmful.

Trump needs to concentrate solely on working out a trade deal with India that is our best interests and not concern himself with whatever business India has with Russia.

The Russians have already bought all the machine tools that they’ll need for years.

Can our Department of State:
1. figure out what the Russian needs are (no NATO in Ukraine, neutral Ukraine, no foreign forces & no long-range missiles in Ukrainian government areas, $300 billion back [over time], no Ukrainian nuclear weapon capability development, no targeted extranational restrictions on traditional Russian exports, etc.)
2. explain why Russia isn’t going to get any more Ukrainian territory by negotiation
3. explain why no Western nation is going to officially sanction Russian territory snatching.

Common Russian consumer items:
1. apartment
2. potatoes
3. bread
4. meat
5. root vegetables
6. electricity
7. running water
8. above ground vegetables
9. fruit
10. some heat
11. vodka
12. public transportation (trams, buses, trains)
13. cellphone & service
14. TV
15. PC
16. cars

Only the PCs, TVs and cellphones are mainly import sourced. Except for the cellphone batteries, these will generally run for years before needing to be replaced.

Some of the cars will no longer function if they break down and an imported repair part is no longer available.

Filling up the back of an SUV or awaiting Amazon deliveries is not part of typical Russian family life.

Russian civil servants don’t commonly make over $100,000/year.

“We should”

write a realistic long-term peace deal and publicly shame Putin into accepting it.
