Is it time for action, or are we still “at the level of words”?
President Donald Trump has been trying to convince Russia’s Vladimir Putin to halt hostilities against Ukraine, but to no avail. Sanctions haven’t worked, nor have deals – and now the talks have turned nuclear. Former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who is currently deputy chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, cautioned Trump to consider Russia’s nuclear capabilities. Was it an off-the-cuff comment, a warning, or a thinly veiled threat? Either way, the American response was to reposition nuclear submarines of our own. Has the situation escalated out of control, or are we – as Fyodor Lukyanov, editor-in-chief of Russia’s Global Affairs, put it – “only at the level of words”?
During his trip to Scotland, Trump announced a ten-day ultimatum (reduced from about 50 days) for Russia to abandon its campaign against Ukraine or face increased tariffs. Dmitry Medvedev’s response was that it didn’t matter whether it was ten or 50 days. All Trump’s bluster was simply a sign that Russia is on the right track and should stay the course. Also, he said Trump would do well to remember “how dangerous the fabled ‘Dead Hand’ can be.”
Russia’s Dead Hand is a mysterious Soviet-era automated system that, allegedly, launches nuclear missiles in response to a “Western attack” even if all the top military commanders have been killed and the capital incinerated. Essentially, it’s a dead man’s switch that deploys the nation’s nuclear arsenal against Western targets (the US, presumably) if those in charge are taken out.
Regardless of how serious Medvedev was or whether that old Soviet holdover still functions, that’s the kind of talk the US takes very seriously. According to the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN), Russia has more...

A little nuclear every now and then is not a bad thing...
The Russians have their boundaries, and so do we.
Russia: Stop the nuclear threats, please.
May 12, 2022: Medvedev warned that NATO military aid to Ukraine could risk a conflict with Russia and potentially lead to "fully fledged nuclear war".
September 27, 2022: Medvedev released a statement on Telegram, using language reminiscent of Russia's nuclear doctrine, indicating that Russia had the right to use nuclear weapons if pushed beyond its limits. He further suggested that the US-led NATO alliance would be too apprehensive of a "nuclear apocalypse" to directly interfere in the conflict.
September 22, 2022: Medvedev stated that Russia could use any weapons in its arsenal, including strategic nuclear weapons, to defend territories incorporated into Russia from Ukraine. This statement coincided with the approaching "sham" referendums in Ukrainian territories occupied by Russia, suggesting these territories, once incorporated, would be protected by Moscow.
Nuclear fearmongering has served their purposes thus far. Trump sees it for what it is, and isn’t quaking.
“Russia: Stop the nuclear threats, please.”
I guess that I missed the threat. All I know of is the Dead Hand comment, which refers to a system that Trump may, or may not, have been informed of (given how the Neocons operated his first term, assuming that they’ve even told Trump anything about Dead Hand is stretching things). And judging by the over-reaction of the Left, it’s quite possible that the Neocons DID NOT inform Trump of it, as they’re clearly looking to escalate, rather than lose in Ukraine.
Now Trump’s is informed, I trust him to make the right decision regarding escalation.

Thanks for posting, it appears many in the US were unaware that Russia has nukes and would use them, if necessary. Reminders are always good.
Trump was President for four years. He almost certainly knew.
“Trump was President for four years. He almost certainly knew.”
With the bunch that he had around him, starting with Bolton? I wouldn’t assume a damn thing.
The macho war of nuclear-ratchet-chat-itis.
"Many unaware"? How? Russians keep threatening us with nukes constantly.
Yes, Russia strong like BULL! Never forget!
Hopefully this is all noise.
Apparently Russian refineries were hit.
I’d go for the ports.
The Ukrainians have drones that could hit Black sea and Baltic ports which still are the predominate exit port for Russian oil to India although Vladivostok is increasing as an export oil terminal and out of range currently for Ukraine drones.
Nobody is going to want to insure any of that shipping even if they transfer oil to other ships or use transport ships under other flags. Uninsured oil shipments would be a lot more expensive.
I think just a few drone hits with some damage would do the trick.
Medvedev watches “Dr. Strangelove”! Who knew!
“War Games” the movie.
The 1st time I remember Russia making nuke threats, I was a kid hiding under my desk at school in one of those weekly drills. It isn’t exactly a new thing...
This is one of the value added benefits of NATO article 5. A war involving one NATO nation implies a war involving 33 nations. It almost inevitably creates an existential threat.

INTERNATIONAL COURT OF JUSTICE
REPORTS OF JUDGMENTS,
ADVISORY OPINIONS AND ORDERS
LEGALITY OF THE THREAT OR USE
OF NUCLEAR WEAPONS
ADVISORY OPINION OF 8 JULY 1996[excerpt at pg 266, pg 44 of pdf]
E. By seven votes to seven, by the President's casting vote, It follows from the above-mentioned requirements that the threat or use of nuclear weapons would generally be contrary to the rules of international law applicable in armed conflict, and in particular the principles and rules of humanitarian law;
However, in view of the current state of international law, and of the elements of fact at its disposal, the Court cannot conclude definitively whether the threat or use of nuclear weapons would be lawful or unlawful in an extreme circumstance of self-defence, in which the very survival of a State would be at stake;
Needs to be updated as of yesterday.
Medvedev and Putin believe that, that the nukes have to be used for something.
If not for devastating the world, then, for issuing threats in the hope that somebody will believe them.
If you build them, use them. But not for real. ;)
