Death toll in 'vile' Russian missile strike on Kyiv rises to 31, including children

The death toll from a large Russian missile and drone attack on Kyiv overnight on Thursday has risen to at least 31 people.

Five children — including a two-year-old — were among the victims of the strike which targeted several areas of the Ukrainian capital. Another 159, including 16 children, were injured, Ukraine's Interior Ministry said.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy called the strike "vile" and said it "demonstrates the need for increased pressure on Moscow and additional sanctions."

"In July alone, Russia used over 5,100 glide bombs against Ukraine, more than 3,800 Shaheds and nearly 260 missiles of various types – 128 of them ballistic," Zelenskyy said.

"This can only be stopped through joint efforts – by America, Europe, and other global actors," he added.

Russia has continued to strike Ukraine even as US President Donald Trump has expressed frustration with Moscow's refusal to fully commit to a ceasefire deal.

On Tuesday, Trump shortened the deadline for Moscow to agree to a truce from 50 to 10 to 12 days. He has threatened to impose stricter sanctions on Russia should Russian President Vladimir Putin not agree to at least a temporary halt in Moscow's all-out war on Ukraine, now well into its fourth year.

Despite Trump's threats, Ukraine's Air Force said Russia launched a total of 309 drones and eight missiles over the course of the night. Its air defences were able to shoot down most, although the city suffered multiple hits from cruise missiles.

You know how they are.

Its funny, because you don't even post who that person is, they must be completely unimportant.

On the Russian side, Medvedev, former Russian President and current Deputy Chairman of the Security Council of the Russian Federation, talking about exterminating Ukrainians.

“The sole question is what to do with them [Ukrainians]. They should be exterminated like rats, not even taken prisoner”

I’ll wait for the UN report on this one (has there ever been one on Bucha, by the way? I remember Russia requesting it),

LOL, before you post Russian propaganda google it first.

UN report details summary executions of civilians by Russian troops in northern Ukraine 07 December 2022

In the initial weeks of the invasion of Ukraine, Russian armed forces summarily executed or carried out attacks on individuals leading to the deaths of hundreds of civilians, the Head of the UN Human Rights Monitoring Mission in Ukraine, Matilda Bogner said today. A UN Human Rights report based on the work of the Mission details how Russian troops killed civilians in Ukrainian towns and villages across the Kyiv, Chernihiv and Sumy regions of Ukraine from 24 February until 6 April 2022.

Bogner said the summary executions examined in the report may constitute a war crime. “There are strong indications that the summary executions documented in this report may constitute the war crime of willful killing,” she said.

The report explains how killings of civilians were not confined to specific locations, although some areas were more affected than others. In the town of Bucha near Kyiv, which was under the control of Russian troops from 5 to 30 March, the Mission documented the killing of 73 civilians (54 men, 16 women, 2 boys and 1 girl) and is in the process of corroborating an additional 105 alleged killings.

Summary executions often followed security checks by Russian armed forces. “A mere text message, a piece of camouflage clothing, or a record of previous military service could have fatal consequences,” Bogner said.

The report states that the UN has, so far, documented the violent deaths of 441 civilians (341 men, 72 women, 20 boys and 8 girls) in the three regions in the initial 6 weeks of the Russian invasion alone. The report cautions that the actual figures are likely to be considerably higher as work is still ongoing to corroborate an additional 198 killings that occurred in the Kyiv, Chernihiv and Sumy regions of Ukraine occupied by Russia in the initial stages of the ongoing armed attack against Ukraine.

You all wanted war. Be careful what you wish for, you just may get it. 31 is a small number when compared to the dead that have already resulted from this.

Yet you still do not understand why we were against getting involved. Our involvement only raised the stakes, instead of really seeking a peaceful end to the hostilities that would have kept Ukraine intact, and Russia not feeling threatened.

But no, we had to put Russia into its place. How is that working out?

Nothing about trying to get both sides of what happened there...so more of a propaganda piece. No surprise.

Anyway, the truth will eventually come out, as it has in what was Yugoslavia, and Syria.

You all wanted war.

Its amazing how the belief in the right of self-defense whether of a home or a country is somehow now "you all wanted war".

No, only one person wanted this war-Putin, who launched an invasion.

I am sure that the pro-Russian crowd will assure us that apartment building was a legitimate military target because a 70 year old retired soldier lived there, or some other such nonsense.

Maybe it wouldn’t have happened if the Ukraine hadn’t been going after Moscow with massive drone attacks......

o more of a propaganda piece. No surprise.

Yup, showing Russian military brutality is a "propaganda piece".

Russian military brutality inflicted on conquered civilians is well documented.

A Small Corner of Hell: Dispatches from Chechnya

"[A Small Corner of Hell] skips harrowingly from year to year and place to place. The arch-villains are the Russian death squads, venal and brutal, and the complacent, lying politicians and generals who profit from the illegal trade in booty, oil, and captives.

Ukraine has been suffering these Russian drone and missile strikes on civilians, from the very start of the war.

No matter what Putrid does, his toadies on FR will always support him.Reminds me of those who cheered for Stalin when allied with Hitler, he ordered his Red Army to invade Poland in 1939.

Ask Poland about the Ukrainians. That’s well documented too. In fact, they are still wanting to excavate areas where atrocities took place..

Donald Tusk's pro-EU government was given a green light by Kyiv to carry out search and exhumation of the remains of Polish victims in November last year.

I’m glad you kept up to date on that. I do wonder if Ukraine “cleaned up” the areas in question though.

The dark irony being that supplying ukes with weapons has shifted the war to that mirroring WWI and the big loser in non-precision strikes - along with falling/intercepted missiles/drones - are civilians.

Besides, if the US IC hadn’t prodded this war the civilians wouldn’t be dying, would they???

Oh, but yeah, the argument is just ‘Russia Russia’...as muttered by a mental patient.

It's called WAR and this is PROPAGANDA

Welcome to the 21st century and the Geneva Conventions, the set of treaties that outline the standards of international law for humanitarian treatment in war.

Key aspects regarding the protection of civilians under the Geneva Conventions:

Prohibition of Targeting Civilians: The fundamental principle is that civilians are protected from attack unless they directly participate in hostilities.

So President Putin had no other choice as he felt threatened ?
