They were the sort of people who could be found working into the evening in an office building anywhere across the city: a police officer with a baby on the way, picking up off-duty security shifts beside the longtime lobby guard. A senior executive at an investment giant, and a young associate with less than a year at her firm, each in the office building at 6:30 p.m. on Monday when a shooter burst into 345 Park Avenue, and killed them all.
Armed with an AR-15-style rifle, the man sprayed the lobby with bullets, first shooting the police officer, Didarul Islam, 36.
Behind a pillar, he found Wesley LePatner, 43, a senior executive at Blackstone and mentor to young women, and shot her.
As he made his way to the elevator, he fired at the security guard, Aland Etienne, 46, as the guard took cover behind a front desk.
Up on the 33rd floor, he began shooting as soon as the doors opened, killing Julia Hyman, 27, an associate at Rudin Management, the real estate firm that owns the building.
Then he turned his gun on himself.
Police identified the assailant as Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old man who had driven to the city from his home in Las Vegas. A note found in Mr. Tamura’s wallet claimed that he was suffering from a degenerative brain disease — C.T.E., chronic traumatic encephalopathy — that he blamed on his past as a high school football player, though the disease can only be diagnosed post-mortem. The note also accused the National Football League, which has offices in the Park Avenue tower, of covering up the dangers of C.T.E.

Escape from New York! (that’s advice in this case, not the title of a movie....)
Couple questions..
Security guard on first floor was not armed.. Why?
A security guard without being armed is just a person.
Officer Islam was shot in the back (per a couple news outlets).. Why?
If true was he running away?
Just asking.
It’s going to get worse when Hans Gruber Madmani takes the camel’s reins in New Yawk. Muslim hoodlums going down the pathway to New Yawk ownership. 9/11 wasn’t enough.
Because armed guards cost more. Someone in the decision chain insisted on the lower cost option.
The front desk is staffed by the building owners. Each tenant staff may have their own security - approved by the building owners as per the lease agreement.
It is pretty common in my state anyway for armed security to be an off duty cop.
Licensed armed security is available but is more expensive than unarmed (still less expensive than a cop) but with an off duty cop you get a better trained individual and better cooperation with the local police.
Why did the cop run?
My guess is that he instantly saw that he was outgunned and was seeking cover to fire from. Turns out that may have been a mistake.
Why was he labeled a hero? Did he return fire? Did he somehow try and stop the coward. He was just another victim and if off duty chance he was unarmed unless he was working a side job.
No mention that he was armed, if that’s the case he was just another civilian try to hide and survive.
Then why did an armed guard leave at 6pm the on coming guard not armed..per reporting?
They likely didn't want to pay for a second shift of armed guards when most from the building were gone.
