8.7 magnitude earthquake near Russia prompts tsunami alerts in Alaska, Hawaii Alerts were also issued for Japan and Guam.

1:07 What is an earthquake? An earthquake is caused when two blocks of Earth's crust slip past each other on a fault plane, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Tsunami alerts were issued for Alaska and Hawaii on Tuesday after a major, 8.7 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Russia, according to officials.
The earthquake occurred about 85 miles off the east coast of Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula with a depth of nearly 12 miles, according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

And now a VOLCANO is erupting on Kamchatka.

This video is okay, from Australia news:

Klyuchevskoy volcano, 15584 feet, lava flows
wow
humdinger.I haven’t seen much about kamchatka....
sounds like Cali/Hawaiii tsunamis were small
haven’t heard japan either
USGS is calling it an 8.8, which would make it the sixth biggest recorded.
Real close to Russia’s big nuclear submarine base in the Pacific. They got hit by the tsunami too.
Maybe the now erupting volcano is a good thing, relieving pressure. The area has been in a state of continuous aftershocks since the 8.8, long list here:
Dying or dead whales beaching in Japan. West coast of South America evacuating to higher ground still.
Yes, there is a lot of development —commercial and residential— in Highland, Schereville, St. John, all along U.S. 30 into Merrillville and Hobart. Crown Point has done a good job in attracting good restaurants and retail in the old courthouse square area. Southlake Mall is still there. I haven’t been there since COVID. I just haven’t had a good reason to go back. Some of the big stores are gone and it has occasional problems from the people who like to hang out there.
Traffic is often heavy on the main drags. One of my sons lives in Merrillville and when I go see him I take some back roads that make the trip like a drive in the country.
Heh this heavy bass line ending
kept playing over and over in my
mind as I was eating a plate 🍽️ of
warmed-up tacos 🌮🌮 for lunch.
It was all instrumental no lyrics
Slice of pumpkin 🎃 pie 🥧 for dessert
LOL 😆 🤣
ANYWAYS I was determined to NOT look at
one of my recent playlists, choosing to
try to get my memory to pull the song
from the cerebral 🧠 archives with about
10 seconds of ending bass, drums and guitar 🎸.
Finally I realized it was a 1970s version
of Neal’s Fandango (video) with Tiran Porter
and Jeff Skunk Baxter from about
1975 (I exchanged a work gift 8-track for
that particular DB 8-track back then).
Playing the song in my mind I remembered
“Loma Prieta my mountain home” so I
came back to the earthquake thread.
No never did drugs LOL 🤣 🤣 🤣.
I believe it was changed to a wtch for the west coast.
“Loma Prieta my mountain home” so I
came back to the earthquake thread.
That’s my favorite Doobies song.
Enough to send a tsunami across the Berring straight.
It’s fantastic and I sooooo remember it
because I made the effort to memorize
the lyrics and sing them to the song
way back in 1975. The shopping 🛒🛍️ mall
where I used to make cheeseburgers and
chicken sandwiches 🥪🥪 is still there.
It kinda freaks me out that I was there
in 1975 with my 60s Mustang. Went there
last summer and was looking where I used
to park in 1975.
I can still remember the cover of the
8-track with the DB on horses 🐴🐴🐴.
Here’s the video that was playing ⏯️
from memory. John Hartmann(?) and
Keith Knutson on drums, Patrick
Simmons singing, Jeff Skunk Baxter
and Tom Johnston (forgot his last name
at this moment). Tiran Porter could
really play that bass.

Don’t know how big these tsunamis were, but FYI, some tsunamis can be as tall as an inch or two...
When a tsunami is predicted, boats want to go AWAY from shore out into the open ocean. Safest place to be.
Oh I checked the video clock
It was 23 seconds of instrumentals that
kept playing over and over in my mind 🧠.
More soda! 🥤🥤🥤
For those wondering 🤔🤔🤔 about
the Loma Prieta reference:
On October 17, 1989, at 5:04 PM, a 6.9
magnitude earthquake hit near Loma Prieta, CA.,
shaking the San Francisco and Monterey Bay regions
I remembered it as fall of 1989 because
a Baseball World Series game was being
played (IIRC) but I wasn’t sure of the
exact date without looking.
So...I looked
AI
Yes, another earthquake similar to the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake is considered highly likely in the San Francisco Bay Area. The US Geological Survey (USGS) estimates a 72% probability of a magnitude 6.7 or greater earthquake striking the region before 2043. While the exact timing and magnitude are impossible to predict with certainty, the area is overdue for a significant seismic event.
For example, the Hayward fault has a recurrence interval of 140-170 years, and the 1868 earthquake on that fault was around the same magnitude as the Loma Prieta earthquake.
(140+170/2=155 years)
The most recent large earthquake on the Hayward Fault was a magnitude 6.8 event in 1868,
1768+155=2023
Made me wonder 🤔 a bit with a previous mention on the thread about The Cascadia Subduction Zone / San Andreas Fault
That’ll be the day
I move back to Annandale

I lived in Dyer on Belden Dr for several years. My old house is still there, though it looks like a dump now. I used to be able to see the IL state board from the tracks across the street from my place. Can't do that now.
Teibel’s is still going strong, and I believe Boz’s might still be there too. The DQ at Cline and 30 is now Dairy Belle. I used to like to go to the Old Warsaw Inn in Lynwood. The owner retired at few years ago and closed it down.
I am from St. Louis but have been in the Chicago area for almost 40 years and have gotten to know NW Indiana over the past 25 years. With a couple of exceptions, I find it a decent place to live.
Here’s an interesting variation on that!
