The world is sweltering. So why is California so much cooler than normal?
The San Francisco Chronicle ^ | July 23, 2025 | Greg Porter

Something strange is happening with California’s summer. While much of the world swelters or floods, California has been caught in a quieter kind of extreme, especially in places like the Bay Area. Here, stable conditions have dominated for weeks, with relentless cloud cover, cool temperatures and a stubborn marine layer. It’s not just a coastal phenomenon. Inland spots are running cooler than normal too, creating a rare kind of regional uniformity for July.

Tuesday was the second consecutive day where not a single spot in the Bay cracked 80 degrees and every location was running below normal temperatures. This cool, muted July follows an equally subdued June, driven by a combination of local ocean conditions and large-scale atmospheric patterns. Along the coast, colder than normal sea surface temperatures sharpen the marine layer, leading to thicker cloud cover, slower clearing and dampened daytime highs, even across the typically hot inland locations.

At the same time, the North Pacific High, a seasonal high-pressure dome over the water, is stronger and sitting near Alaska, enhancing the onshore pressure gradient and steering marine air farther inland. That setup brought stronger winds in June and murkier skies in July, reinforcing the now-familiar “No-Sky July” feedback loop.

California has been on the eastern flank of one such ridge, locked into a cool, cloudy pattern that persisted through June and July and now looks to continue into early August. Elsewhere, the same jet stream setup has delivered much more active weather from the grueling heat in Europe and Asia to the deadly flash floods across parts of the U.S.

Patterns like these are hard to break down, and this one has been ongoing for the better part of June and July. And it’s likely to continue at least into the first part of August...

The world is sweltering? Is that a scientific fact?

"After the record-shattering Hunga Tonga undersea eruption in 2022, millions of acres of the sea literally turned red, the combined result of megatons of sulphuric ash and a rust-red cytoplankton bloom observable from space."

A friend of mine was living in Apple Valley, CA where Roy Roger lived. Roy told him that he has been everywhere and So. CA was the best year around.

It’s 5 o’clock somewhere.

Hottest June and July I’ve experienced in 72 years here in the DC Metro area. We’ve had really hot days early in the season before, but not such a long, unbroken train of them.

We’re hoping for a storm to come up the coast, to clean things out.

Will Roy’s remarks “trigger” a response here?

Last week I was up visiting my parents just south of Charlotte.

95 or so for the few hours I was out there. I tried out an RC tank and a Go Pro macro for the first time.

After a couple of hours, the wonky RC tank was doing better than I was. On my 90 mile drive home, I had the AC on full blast just about all the way.

I could run the Go Pro in short sessions to keep from getting a high temperature alarm.

I’ve heard that Mark Twain once said that the coldest winter he ever spent was one summer in San Francisco. May or may not be a genuine Twain quote (so many aren’t), but I don’t feel like tracking it down at the moment.

Up in East Texas, June was below normal and July is pretty close to average. Highest temperature has been 96. No 100’s in the forecast. Just need a little sea breeze shower.

I am in Palm Desert and I have to say this is one of the mildest summers EVER!! Normally the nights are just as hot as during the day the nights have been absolutely beautiful nice breezes with temps in the high 70’s!! There are 2 feral kitties I feed, normally I pit ice out in the grass in a certain area so they can lay down and cool off in the evenings the ice melts makes the ground cold and the two of them just roll around out there before they eat!! This year they just skip the cooling off jump right up on the deck and chow down!! It is the end of July and I have been VERY THANKFUL for this cooler summer we have had a couple of really hot weeks with high humidity BUT nothing like normal summer conditions!!!!

The whole West Coast is much colder this year.

63F is a good 10 degrees cooler than normal for Victoria in July
