China to build world's largest hydropower dam in Tibet (threatens India)
BBC ^

China has approved the construction of what will be the world's largest hydropower dam, stoking concerns about displacement of communities in Tibet and environmental impacts downstream in India and Bangladesh.

The dam, which will be located in the lower reaches of the Yarlung Tsangpo river, could generate three times more energy than the Three Gorges Dam, currently the world's largest hydropower plant. ...

Reports indicate that the colossal development would require at least four 20km-long tunnels to be drilled through the Namcha Barwa mountain, diverting the flow of the Yarlung Tsangpo, Tibet's longest river.

Experts and officials have also flagged concerns that the dam would empower China to control or divert the flow of the trans-border river, which flows south into India's Arunachal Pradesh and Assam states and onwards into Bangladesh.

...

Arunachal Pradesh chief minister Pema Khandu has warned that the dam poses an existential threat to the people of the region and could be used as a “water bomb” by China.

“The issue is that China cannot be trusted. No one knows what they might do,” Khandu told news agency PTI earlier this month.

“Setting aside the military threat from China, it seems to me that this is a far bigger issue than anything else. It is going to cause an existential threat to our tribes and our livelihoods. It is quite serious because China could even use this as a sort of 'water bomb’.”

Thank you very much and God bless you.

Three times the size of the Three Gorges Dam project, and upstream from India, where if they released the water, or the dam failed, would flood millions in India.

This is such a bad idea in so many ways, but typical behavior by the CCP.

Three times the size of the Three Gorges Dam...

Which itself is an existential catastrophe waiting to happen.

Insurance policy, I reckon. Since the Gorges dam is a threat to China, they wanted a way to ensure they would not be attacked without risking devastation to somebody else.

It’s a threat but I’m not sure it’s catastrophic as is being suggested. It’s a huge river in eastern India, flowing on to Bangladesh but it gets most of its water from within India. The dam could work as a water bomb theoretically but the Indian state to which it would first flow is comparatively sparsely populated and India can build dams there to mitigate any risk. The river floods massively in the lower plains during the monsoon , so a certain amount of risk is always present. Bangladesh would bear the brunt of any severe flooding.
