Natural Hair Discrimination

For decades, LDF has recognized natural hair discrimination as racism by another name. Through advocacy and litigation, LDF has worked to end race-based hair discrimination.

What is Hair Discrimination?

Hair discrimination is rooted in systemic racism, and often helps preserve white spaces.

Policies that further hair discrimination advance white Anglo-Saxon Protestant cultural norms as the default norms to which everyone should adhere.

Hair and grooming policies that prohibit natural hairstyles — like afros, braids, bantu knots, and locs — have been used to justify the removal of Black children from classrooms and Black adults from their employment.

With no nationwide legal protections against hair discrimination, Black people are often left to risk facing consequences at school or work for their natural hair or invest time and money to conform to Eurocentric professionalism and beauty standards.

No one should be targeted for being who they are. The criminalization of Black hairstyles must end. Together with the CROWN Coalition, LDF is fighting to end hair discrimination and push for The CROWN Act to become law prohibiting hair discrimination in all 50 states.

We’ve compiled a list of FAQs to help you learn more about Black hair, how natural hair discrimination perpetuates systemic racism, and how you can help fight back against natural hair discrimination. Below it, you will find examples of LDF cases related to hair discrimination against Black people in schools and workplaces.

I still have no idea what they're talking about even after they explained it.

Braided hair is natural. Got it. I see hair braid itself all the time.

Next thing they're going to work on is rat poison discrimination. You CAN'T discriminate against rat poison!!! Pretty soon the containers on the shelves will be generic like his/her...

The gov't prefers a lot of you dead anyway. Gov't "healthcare" is a big step in that direction. Outlawing all disrimination (AKA FREE CHOICE) helps...

And yet they wear wigs so they can have white girl hair.

Hollywood couldn’t make this up.

Unnatural hair? Borrowed from someone else or manufactured?

Infantile Buckwheat braids on grown men?

I have my opinions but ashy grandmother said, I keep my mouth shut.

As long as no one can smell your hair, it’s fine. It’s your hair. No one else has to like it.

Safety regarding length or covering applies to everyone.

If a private school has dress and grooming codes, find out before you enroll.

Back in the day the corporate world frowned on hairstyles that worked well with textured hair, such as corn rows, other braids, afro’s, dreadlocks, etc. Which is kind of dumb because a person is often “stuck” with the kind of hair they are born with unless they do extreme chemistry on it.

It’s a real thing ... my college roommate back in teh 80s literally spent ALL of Saturday working on her hair to get it straight enough to go into a sort of Princess Diana style (straight, flipped)

So that was years ago. Just this past week I saw 2 white ladies with ghastly imitation dreadlocks/extensions down to their waists.

But it’s a corporate thing. Where I work, no one cares what your hair or bbeard look like as long as they are fixed so they don’t get caught in machinery.

The Texas Legislature passed the CROWN Act and it is now the law in Texas.

I still have no idea what they're talking about even after they explained it.

“Racism,” as they pose it, has no explanation. All this means is “hate whitey,” as usual.

It galled me that Texas passed one of these inane anti-discrimination laws several years ago. What it did in practice is nullify any standards of grooming or dress codes for all businesses, not just hair styles. Anyone could claim that prohibitions to wearing gang wear at work was “racially insensitive,” and have standing with this law.

I see nasty dirty ropes for their hair everywhere. I'm OK with those people sporting a "conk" however—clean, neat, stylish.

“Natural hairstyles” — like afros, braids, bantu knots, and locs, have nothing “natural” about them at all. The highly imaginative fascination with these extreme ‘do styles is in the same light as tattoos and body piercings. Worn not as a matter of individuality, this was much more an “in your face” gesture than any significant artistic expression.

Whitey hates it, so EVERYBODY should wear it. Only, “Whitey” did not start off hating those styles, but the behavior exhibited by those who defiantly insisted on wearing them when they became the badge of bad actors.

Call it “racist” if you will. But stereotypes exist for a reason.

Dumb Blonde? That might be what you are.

One of my prejudices acquired in early childhood is that I considered Blondes dumb. They sure acted dumb.

The I Love Lucy show used to refer to dumb Blondes. In the comics, it was the blonde who was dumb. From childhood up thru Married with Children it was the Dumb Blonde.

The movie: ‘don’t tell mom the babysitter is dead’ is the first time I remember that a blonde was not dumb. Then that was followed by Legally Blonde movie which presented a smart blonde.

Now do you understand what they are talking about?

Hair discrimination is rooted in systemic racism...

The only "systemic racism" the US has ever experienced is the fifty years of straight, white males being the only people it was legal to discriminate against, and discrimination against them being required by law.
