As more businesses go cashless, Sen. John Fetterman (D-PA) wants to make it illegal to refuse legal tender.

Fetterman, along with Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-ND), introduced the Payment Choice Act on Thursday. It would require businesses to accept cash without “It’s simple,” Fetterman said, “if you’re open for business in America, you should take U.S. dollar.”

Under the proposed legislation, businesses must either accept cash or provide a device that converts cash to a prepaid card so long as it does not charge a fee. Businesses could refuse payments made with $50 bills or larger.

Failure to comply would come with a $500 fine for a first offense and not more than $1,500 for subsequent offenses.

The bill earned the support of the National ATM Council, which represents the business interests of ATM owners.any strings attached.

Fetterman is not stupid. I remember going to a FedEx store and they wouldn't take cash. I thought cash was "legal tender for all debts public and private". Good for Fetterman.

When I go to the clinic I hear the admission clerks tell other patients that they don’t accept cash for the co-pay.

Good, as long as it is stand alone with no additions.

I have already sent a very large a certified letter regarding their use of automated checkouts that accept cash. The clerk for the very large retailer says, “Are you using cash” which lets every one around you know if you are carrying cash.

Nope, very common misconception. Extremely common.

The seller determines what he will accept for payment. What if I don’t want dollars? I don’t want the hassle. Theft concerns.

The dollar is legal tender (fiat) because the government says you have to take it. Nobody would accept pieces of paper with dead guys picture on it otherwise, right? That would be stupid. But that’s the deal. The converse, the government (usually …. History is replete with exceptions) this also the government must accept their legal tender currency for payment of debts. Usually taxes. If you check your property tax bill, notice the fine print where it says they take cash. They don’t like it either, because of the hassles involved, but they have no choice. If a debt is owed denominated in dollars, whomever it is, they cannot refuse dollars for repayment.

A store, a restaurant, uncle Bill selling his Corvette, whatever, no debt is owed. Therefore they do not have to accept dollars or cash, for payment if they don’t want, because there is no debt owed. The transaction has not occurred yet. Uncle Bill or McDonalds can say they will only accept Wampum or Beanie Babies if they choose. Totally up to the seller.

Make sense now?

Well a restaurant feeds you before you pay, so technically you owe them a debt.

How about forcing govt outfits to take cash ???
Many refuse to
Florida for one refuses to accept cash for your CCW renewal, which you do in person anyway for the photo.

If you left the cash they refused, on the table, they can't charge you with theft.

Yes, but they will let you know ahead of time if they don’t take cash for exactly this reason, to avoid any awkward or embarrassing moments for patrons.

In Europe, I’m not necessarily a fan, but one thing they do, it is required to post their Menu outside the establishment, and prices. That way anyone can determine if they can afford to eat there without causing trouble.

While this “you must take cash” *sounds* good, it really isn’t. This is why anytime a Democrat seems to make sense, or you find yourself in agreement, you better drill down farther and make sure you understand what they are proposing.

I like cash, there is no substitute. What I like is the leftist asshats who want to get rid of “large denomination bills”. There aren’t any large denomination bills any longer. A $100 bill gets vaporized instantly at the grocery.
