Sources say the explosive had been brought back from a seemingly routine bomb squad call, and it was believed to be inactive.
EAST LOS ANGELES (KABC) -- Three members of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Arson/Explosives Detail were killed Friday morning in an explosion at a training facility in East Los Angeles, authorities said.
A separate investigation is underway in Santa Monica at a scene the three deputies reportedly responded to on Thursday.
The incident, which was believed to be an accident, was reported around 7:30 a.m. at the Biscailuz Training Facility in the 1000 block of North Eastern Avenue, LASD said. The compound houses the sheriff's department's special enforcement units and bomb squad.
Multiple law enforcement sources briefed on the investigation told ABC News that it appears the explosive that detonated had been brought back to the facility from a seemingly routine bomb squad callout and was believed to have been inert when it exploded.
Three LASD members assigned to the agency's Arson/Explosives Detail were killed in the blast, L.A. County Sheriff Robert Luna said at a late-morning news conference.
They were identified as Deputy Joshua Kelley-Eklund, Deputy Victor Lemus, and Deputy William Osborn, who were all assigned to the Special Enforcement Bureau's Arson Explosives Detail...

LASD conduct search warrant in Santa Monica linked to East LA explosion
The Los Angeles Sheriff's Department was executing a search warrant Friday at a Santa Monica residence related to the investigation of an explosion in East Los Angeles that killed three deputies, police said. The search warrant was being served in the area of Bay and Lincoln Avenue. Evacuations were conducted for the complex and the surrounding area, according to LASD Deputy Miguel Meza.
Two hand grenades were recovered Thursday after a renter at the property reported finding them inside a storage unit to Santa Monica police. The LASD bomb squad removed two hand grenades, determined to be inert, from the complex, according to Santa Monica police.
"Homicide detectives are in the process of obtaining a search warrant for the location and out of the abundance of caution the LAPD Bomb Squad, ATF and FBI will search the location for any potential explosive materials," said Nicole Nishida with LASD. "At this time, it is not determined if the devices found yesterday have any correlation to today’s critical incident."
I wonder if these were party favors intended for an anti-ICE riot.
That’s my suspicion. And why there hasn’t been any news about it.
Long way to go on this. Booby trap? They thought the devices were safe. Antifa? Soros? Obsessive schizo ex explosive expert?
RIP for the brave dead officers.
> routine bomb squad call
Routine? How often are they called?
WTF is a routine bomb? Godspeed to the officers and prayers for their families. To serve means risks. Some give all, all give some. This is truly sad.
How often are they Routine?
No mention of who rented the storage unit.
Maybe they’re looking for the person before they give out anymore info.
ATF and FBI are supposedly investigating.

Let’s see what happens when I pull this pin out.
“I wonder what made them believe the device was inert; and where did it come from ?”
And what is a “routine” bomb squad call?
The only way I could think it would be a “routine” call is if someone found a device they thought might be a bomb or at least dangerous. They call they PD who thinks the thing is basically inert, but, because they like to blow things up, decide to blow it up, to be “safe”.
The bomb people severely underestimate are the explosive power of the thong, and it blows the containment device to high heaven.
Something like this happened in LA a few years ago when they tried to set off a cache of fireworks they had seized.
“thing” not “thong”
Well, I've never been on a bomb squad, but I wouldn't think that than ANY callout would be considered routine.
Total speculation on my part, not backed by any known facts: It was an FBI entrapment device intended to implicate a patsy in an FBI sting without actually being a danger, OK?
I thought you were making a crack...
