it’s worth mourning a type of show premised on the idea that we all lived in a shared reality, one that a gifted bridger of increasingly broad gaps between us might make coherent and make funny.

They despised the normal people of this nation.

The only thing “chilling” to the writer is that aside from the 200,000 people watching Colbert in the 18-49 age bracket, we don’t care.

Those shows were cool and fun. But now they have massive content from any interesting person they can imagine online. And the fun of the Johnny Carson, Lenno, early Letterman and other shows has been replaced with hyper-partisan meanness. The comedy is no longer funny, it’s just mockery.

They were already facing headwinds, and their politics killed it.

Who writes this CRAP? They must be rather young and know nothing at all about the history of T.V. shows!

Late night talk shows ( ONLY ON NBC, FWIW) began on NBC with Steve Allen as host in the early 1950s, followed by Jack Paar, and then Johnny Carson, which makes this kind of show somewhere over SEVENTY YEARS OLD!

When the late-night Joey Bishop show was cancelled decades ago, did it mark the end of America as we know it?

The real reason is that comedy can’t be done with animosity.

Colbert and Kimmel do their political comedy with animosity towards half of the voting population, so it’s only natural that half the people would stop watching.

I remember both Letterman and Conan’s political comedy, which was always absurd and tongue and cheek, and never really attacked politicians for policy, but personality.

Then there’s the fact that young viewers just watch their comedy on Youtube. They don’t tune in to broadcast TV anymore.

Late night TV died when Johnny Carson retired in 1922. Leno was pretty good following that but no Johnny.

Letterman was an angry liberal that thought he was better than everyone else and his jokes sucked.

Craig Ferguson was pretty good. Sid the cussing bunny skit was great.

The Ed Sullivan Show is gone. Bonanza is gone. Wagon Train is gone. Gilligan’s Island is gone. Seinfeld is gone. Three’s Company is Gone. And yet the country somehow still lives on.

The EV car to replace the 1974 Ford Gran Torino can have an LGBTQ flag colors paint job to replace the “striped tomato” look.

Pilot of re-boot. Young mayor in NYC has a highly popular, efficient and successful string of people’s food distribution centers replacing the former chain owned supermarkets. Saboteurs led by a suit wearing, short haired Christian minister zealot are trying to ruin the immigrant friendly food centers. Starsky and Hutch arrest one at a pro-life center, another at a Trump rally and then engage in a wild shootout in a church.

Candidly, the only Late Night host I liked since Carson was Conan.

Yea, he’s a lefty. But that wasn’t his jam.

And he was genuinely FUNNY. Further, he let his guests talk.

Anytime Bill Burr was on Conan it was off-the-hook hilarious. He got away with jokes that other hosts would have bleeped. Give it a try. https://youtu.be/rB9Z-os6-Ws

Everyone else sucks.

I have to agree that late-night TV sucked in 1923.

Yes, admit it, we all know that was the day America was over.
We’re kidding ourselves without Joey Bishop. Self-delusion.😰

Democrats destroyed late night television. They destroy everything that they get control over. I’m starting to see a pattern.

Very few FR posts have made me laugh as hard as yours.

I could picture it in my mind as I read it, maybe that’s why it got me laughing so much.

The early M*A*S*H was the best, then it went woke and destroyed the show.
