Gov. Gavin Newsom eyes redraw of California congressional districts to send more Democrats to DC

Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday confirmed he's seriously considering two options to try to redraw California's congressional districts to get more Democrats elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.

The update comes after President Donald Trump earlier this week urged Republican state lawmakers in Texas to help the party pick up five seats in that state. Gov. Greg Abbott has directed the state Legislature to discuss redistricting in an upcoming special legislative session.

Unlike Texas, the California Legislature does not draw district maps. Every 10 years, the state's independent redistricting commission undertakes the work through a lengthy, citizen-led process. Voters approved this commission and process in 2008.

Newsom said Wednesday option one involves calling a special election to take the state's redistricting process back to the voters. Constitutional amendments in California first require a 2/3 vote from state lawmakers before the issue heads to voters.

Option two involves calling on the California Legislature to quickly redraw the congressional district maps before the 2026 election. Elections expert Paul Mitchell posted on X Wednesday the state constitution says nothing about a mid-decade redraw for Congressional maps, which may or may not allow the legislature to do it.

"I was one of, at the time, a few Democrats that supported independent redistricting," the governor told reporters in Los Angeles. "At the same time, I'm very fearful about what's going on in this country."

Newsom, pointing to Texas, said, "they're playing by a different set of rules."

"We can sit on the sidelines and talk about the way the world should be, or we could recognize the existential nature that is this moment," Newsom said.

Some California lawmakers from both parties on Wednesday told KCRA 3 they think the idea is ridiculous and called it gerrymandering.

they lose several congressional seats

They've already lost a couple because people are exiting the state. That trend will continue.

“and as gutless as the Reps are...”

As I understand it, Republicans have no power to do much of anything politically in Cal. The dems have 75% or the seats in both the General Assembly and the state Senate. They can always try law fare, but even there they are up against a very strong headwind.

And because of the jungle primary system, they lucky to even get on the general election ballot in most of the state.

they can take them to court just like the democrats do in Texas every time redistricting is tried. Except of course the dems win every time.

“Gov. Gavin Newsom on Wednesday confirmed he’s seriously considering two options to try to redraw California’s congressional districts to get more Democrats elected to the U.S. House of Representatives.”

Why not just advocate policies that people don’t hate.

Today is Elbridge Gerry’s birthday. He died in office as Vice President to President James Madison. The Democratic Party claims to descend from the party started by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison.

That's fine. Call a snap Constitutional Convention and break California into 14 new states.

Gruesome can have _untville where his favorite restaurant -- French Laundry -- for him to flaunt his own COVID crackdowns is still open and never required masks per Goblin's own edict.

His pathetic efforts to constantly own the MSM newscycle space, he fears the Bernie/AOC team-up so. incredibly. badly. If she runs she will box him out of the early primaries and by the time Kalifornia rolls around he will be well and truly f----d.

"In the days following the 2024 election, FR was loaded with screams that the seats not decided election night in Calif were being stolen. They were not being stolen that night. "

Yeah they were stolen in the two months to follow of counting counting counting.

Pelosi's daughter celebrated the steal by breaking into song, she just had to, as I will when you get the long-overdue zot.

"Christine Pelosi, political organizer and daughter of Nancy Pelosi, was so excited about curing ballots for Gray in the Central Valley that she broke out into song about it on X yesterday — not Lady Gaga’s certified banger “The Cure,” but a slightly rewritten rendition of Willie Nelson’s classic “On the Road Again.” Sadly, it won’t be going platinum: She deleted her post hours later."

Not much CA GOP can do.
RAT Supermajority.
TX could have fixed their problems 30 years ago.
It is nice they are finally getting to it.

Nope. We’re doing the same in Texas and will get five seats. The problem in California is they have 54 seats and only 9 are republicans, so it will be difficult to find five new seats for them.

Newsom has a veto-proof Democrat super majority in the California legislature, so this is as good as a done deal.

California should lose congressmen. They cheated on the census.
