Donald Trump asked Volodymyr Zelensky if Ukraine was capable of striking Moscow, as he encouraged more long-range strikes inside Russia. The US president told his Ukrainian counterpart that he wanted Ukraine to “make them [Russians] feel the pain” and force Putin to the negotiation table, sources told the Financial Times. “Volodymyr, can you hit Moscow?... Can you hit St Petersburg too?” the US president reportedly asked on the July 4 call. The Ukrainian president replied: “Absolutely. We can if you give us the weapons.” Following the call, Kyiv received a list from US aides of long-range strike systems that could be made available via third-party transfers. Despite Mr Trump’s shifting stance, the US reportedly remains reluctant to give Ukraine Tomahawk missiles, precision strike cruise missiles that can hit targets 1,600km away.

I am sick of hearing Russia threaten nuclear war. There is no such thing and the Cold War should have taught Putin that.

This is the only time I have thought Trump doesn’t understand the stakes. There are people who will bite off their noses not to give in, fight to the death. Putin is that man, scorched earth is second nature to him.
IMHO this is the worst tactic to deal with Putin and emboldens Zelensky who has already shown he puts winning above the lives and substance of the Ukraine.
If you can’t win a real war, then win a propaganda one.

Yep. Remember the Tomahawk can be fitted with either a nuclear or conventional tip, and the two can be switched in under an hour. Presumably Pres. Trump wouldn’t let the Ukrainians have any of the nuke payloads (or would he?), but the Russians could never be sure if the incoming Tomahawks their defense systems pick up headed to Moscow and St Petersburg are nuclear or conventional. What’s their response?

All he can do at this point is level up the pain on the Russians in a last-ditch effort to force Putin back to the negotiating table.

The story was obviously BS.
Those weapons could be intercepted en route to Ukraine. Russia still has a submarine fleet that can take out MSC ships transporting materiel. And those would be legit war targets at this point.
