Andrew Cuomo Will Run in NYC Mayor’s General Election as an Independent
The Wall Steet Journal ^ | July 14, 2025 | Joseph de Avila

Andrew Cuomo isn’t giving up yet on his political comeback.

The former governor plans to mount a competitive campaign in the general election for mayor of New York City after his surprise loss in the Democratic primary to Zohran Mamdani.

Cuomo’s name will appear on the general election ballot under the independent “Fight and Deliver” party he created as a backup plan in the event he lost the primary.

The general election will be a rematch between Cuomo and Mamdani and will also feature Mayor Eric Adams, who is running as an independent. Curtis Sliwa, the Republican nominee, and independent Jim Walden will also be on the ballot.

Cuomo will compete with Adams for moderate voters disaffected by the Democratic nomination of Mamdani, a democratic socialist that campaigned on freezing the rents of rent-stabilized apartments and providing free bus service.

He cast New York as a city in crisis and said his 10-years of experience as governor made him best equipped to lead with a steady hand. He campaigned as a business-friendly centrist, promising to hire more police, making subways safer and sticking up to President Trump.

Major Democrats like former President Bill Clinton and billionaire former New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg endorsed him. The major labor unions and real estate industry—fearful of Mamdani’s campaign pledge to freeze the rents—lined up behind Cuomo.

But it wasn’t enough in the primary. Cuomo fizzled out after running into the Mamdani campaign’s army of supporters and a flood of grassroots donations that overwhelmed the former governor’s efforts. Cuomo’s opponents encouraged voters to use the ranked-choice system in the primary to pick anyone but him, with Mamdani ending up the top beneficiary.

Does Cuomo have a better shot than Adams? Seem like they will split the anti-commie vote.

Adams is better than Cuomo. But knowing New York, they'll prefer Cuomo lol

“I’ll bet the muzzy commie will be the next mayor.”

He’s pretty much a shoe in at this point.

Yep. And we will see the real estate market crash in NYC. Everyone will be selling.

With Democrats, one must view this with a lot of suspicion. Early polls right after the primary showed Governor Coomo (as Jesse Jackson called his father) even with Mamdani. Now, Mamdani has about a 10-15 point lead over Cuomo. If Adams drops out, Cuomo wins. If he doesn’t, it’s going to be tough to beat Zohan the Commie. I think Zohan the Commie beats Eric the Red straight up, but one could argue quite convincingly that Cuomo is playing spoiler. If Curtis dropped out, then there’s a real path for either Cuomo or Adams to win. I never thought I’d say that Adams and Cuomo are both the path to sanity in an insane city.

Could split the vote 4 ways (Mamdani, Cuomo, Adams, Sliwa) and the winner could have 30-35%.

Agreed. Don't forget there was one poll in Iowa that was way off before the election.

Given the NYC voting system, if each voter who does not want the communist puts the other 3 candidates in the 1 2 and 3 spots on their ballot, then one of those three will win. The communist does not have 50% support.

Ego over concern for the city, eh Mr. Cuomo?

By the way, the same goes for Curtis Sliwa.

Maybe after Mamdani wins he’ll send Cuomo and Sliwa “Thank You” cards. After all, that would be the decent thing to do.

Egotistical self centered tone deaf prick. Thinks since his name is Cuomo he’s entitled to job. Never dawned on him that one of the reasons the Commie won the primary is that a lot of folks hate his f’n guts. Him and Governor Hair Gel out in California must have been separated at birth.

Mamdani is going to win.

One reason my predictions work is I am not like other people who link their desires to their prognostications, thus making them wishes instead of predictions.

Of course I don’t want him to win. Any more than AOC re-elected as she was despite ignoring her district and Gavin surviving the recall with 69%.

Exactly. Cuomo brings nothing to the table except his ego. Eric Adams might not be everyone's perfect candidate, but he is a bulwark against complete insanity of the commie. I am dumbfounded by Cuomo's ego.

Someone or 2 will have to drop out just before Election Day depending on the polls.
