President Trump is considering authorizing fresh funding for Ukraine for the first time since he took office in January, multiple diplomatic sources told CBS News.
The sources indicated the new funding could be intended to send a message to Russia, which has pounded Ukraine with drone and missile attacks in recent days. Russia this week launched what Ukraine described as the largest drone attack since its full-scale invasion began in February 2022 — the latest in a wave of aerial assaults that have pummeled Kyiv and other cities.
Mr. Trump hinted earlier this week that he planned to send Ukraine more defensive weapons. Just days earlier, his administration paused some arms shipments — a move one White House official cast as one part of a wider global review of weapons transfers.
The source of the possible new funding for Ukraine is unclear. But U.S. officials told CBS News Mr. Trump has $3.85 billion in leftover Biden-era presidential drawdown authority sitting at his fingertips, which could be used to send American military equipment to Ukraine. Former officials also told CBS News the president has the authority to seize around $5 billion in foreign Russian assets and direct the funds to Ukraine, though neither he, nor former President Joe Biden have used that power.

You’re just a war mongering nutjob.
How is attacking me going to win the argument for you? And how am I the warmonger when I didn't start the war. In fact, it's those that use rhetoric that supports Putin's side, that is causing the war to be prolonged. IOW, your rhetoric is more indicative of a warmonger than anything I have ever said.
The US is $37 trillion in debt.
Not because of Ukraine support. Aid to Ukraine is microscopic in comparison the the national debt. Find a different excuse for why the debt is so huge.
Do you think adding an additional trillion or 2 to that figure is in US interests?
Is that how much aid the U.S. has sent to Ukraine? Stop making things up.
And ween it comes to 'interest', it's the interest on the debt that is causing the national debt to grow so fast. Aid to Ukraine is tiny in comparison.
Ukraine is by far the most corrupt country in Europe and probably sold half of the military equipment we’ve sent them on the black market.
Corruption occurs in all countries, and Ukraine is no exception. We have a lot more corruption in the U.S., and within each state and within each county, and within each city and town. But, Russia has the most corruption, with Putin being the most corrupt 'leader' in the whole world, where his wealth is estimated to be around $300 billion. Nnce work if you can get it. How does the president of Russia get to be the richest man in the world?
And how did you get that 'intelligence' about Ukraine selling any part of the military aid? I bet you're just making it up, again. If you actually have that kind of knowledge about the goings on in Ukraine, I'm pretty sure Trump and the state department and our defense department would like to talk to you about it.
Put up or shut up.
And for all practical purposes the war has been lost in case you haven’t noticed.
Yeah, I've heard the same thing for more than 3 years now. But, somehow, the war still rages on. What gives? Putin is still struggling to keep the same 20% of Ukraine that was taken at the beginning of the war. Is 20% the same as the 100% of Ukraine that Putin wants? And why are some 5,000 - 7,000 Russians still dying in Ukraine every day, in a war that's been over for more than 3 years?
I can’t imagine anyone in their right mind would support a continuation of this war.
You must be looking in the mirror, because it's you that is supporting a continuation of the war with your rhetoric, and Putin loves you for it.

I thought Trump did not want further commitment of additional funding to the Ukraine. Were we mislead?
No, you were not misled.
Trump had no idea that Putin would be so hard to deal with. Putin changed Trump's mind.

This war is a WW 1 style stalemate, but both Nations are too proud and stupid to listen to President Trump and come to the tabel. So, now there meatgrinder continues.
Of the two nations at war, Ukraine has been the only one wanting to negotiate. Putin is willing to 'negotiate' but under the precondition that he gets all of Ukraine. Putin has a non-started position. Ukraine is not going to give up any territory for which Russia has no right.
Stalemate it is. But Russia is suffering a lot more damage, in troops losses and equipment losses, and mostly, economically.

“”””No one has yet mentioned the DoD details of a few days ago authorizing funding for building more Patriot missiles.
The first is not scheduled for delivery for years from now. They are billion dollar items. They don’t churn off an assembly line in a few weeks””””
You make it sound like we aren’t producing any of them already, how many of the missiles do we currently produce and how many by next year?

When it comes to wars or national security or foreign affairs, it's not about popularity surveys. We don't conduct polls before spending of military aid or in funding wars. If we were to depend on polls for spending on military missions, it's likely that our bombing of the Iranians uranium sites would have been rejected.
Most people have no idea about what's happening in Ukraine, or who is doing what to who. Some people don't even know where Ukraine is on the world map.
Popularity contests are for sports events and beauty contests. Leaders are chosen because direct democracy doesn't work too well. Nothing would ever get done.

I think it was 400/yr made as current (pre Ukraine) production. That is to serve current demand, some of which is ageing/failure taking place in not only the US but also in other countries.
The Ukraine draw down means that more than that 400 have to be produced — which is likely why DoD added the delivery schedule of May 2028

2024 produced more than 500 with 2025 probably seeing a 20% increase and 650 annually by 2027.
Other countries are also being licensed to produce the highly sought after system.
Russia’s invasion has reawakened the West’s weapons industry from where it was stagnating in 2022.

Trump had no idea that Putin would be so hard to deal with. Putin changed Trump's mind. Yup
"I'm not happy with Putin. I can tell you that much right now," Trump said, noting that Russian and Ukrainian soldiers were dying in the thousands.
"We get a lot of bullshit thrown at us by Putin ... He's very nice all the time, but it turns out to be meaningless," Trump said

The AI gave me a monthly number that added to 400ish — though it does appear to have been the count for end of 2023, not 2024.
I am curious about consumption. Drills would require periodic live fires — meaning what is the use rate outside Ukraine for training and maintenance. Hard numbers to get, though there is talk of the Pentagon having only 25% of US reqmts available at any time, given that lengthy maintenance sequencing.
Besides which, I suspect the system isn’t very good against the targets that matter . . . those hypersonic with plasma stealth and big warhead mass numbers vs the 50 lb warheads on UAVs.
