Property Taxes need to be totally eliminated. They are nothing more than Governmental Theft!!
So where will the money come from to pay for local services? The State? The Federal Government?
🎶 I went back to Ohio
But my city was gone
There was no train station
There was no downtown
South Howard had disappeared
All my favorite places
My city had been pulled down
Reduced to parking spaces
Ay, oh, way to go, Ohio…🎶

Petition Title and Summary of Proposed Constitutional Amendment to Eliminate Property Taxes in Ohio Is Accepted
5/9/2025
The Ohio Attorney General’s Office today accepted the petition title and summary of a proposed constitutional amendment, “Abolishment of Taxes on Real Property,” that seeks to add a Section 14 to Article XII of the Ohio Constitution
For the most part, local taxes are far too high and not spent properly. Many of those “services” can be eliminated.
“Property Taxes need to be totally eliminated. They are nothing more than Governmental Theft!!”
In my area of Ohio at least, we vote on tax levies. Some proposed levies have failed to get enough votes to go into effect over the years.
You don’t like property taxes, so propose an alternative where the people still have a direct input.
This has become a regular topic here on Free Republic.
People here do not like property taxes.
As you point out, if property taxes were abolished, where does money come from to pay for everything that government is doing? Realistically other types of taxes would have to be raised.
I sympathize with some people, especially older people, who may own a house that has skyrocketed in value. , so their taxes have been raised. But just because they own a house doesn’t necessarily mean they have a lot of money to pay their property tax.
And I certainly do not have the answers. But this subject does seem to get discussed a lot here.
Sounds to me like it’s time to cut government spending.
I read where Trump wants to do away with Property Taxes
For the most part, local taxes are far too high and not spent properly
How many people bother to vote in Local elections?
Maybe government could do less. Maybe rather than simply raising appraisals when they spend money they don’t have they could function within a budget like people do. Government is one of the few entities that never seems to cut back.
High Property Taxes and a Blue City .... hmmm.
“So where will the money come from to pay for local services? The State? The Federal Government?”
Florida is running a surplus. DeSantis wants to use that surplus to ease property tax bills.
“For the most part, local taxes are far too high and not spent properly. Many of those “services” can be eliminated.”
Which services?
NYS is one of them.
The county needs to tighten it’s belt just like it’s tax payers are doing.
Deport 13,000+ illegals.
Back in my day, we had 40 students in each classroom. They have 16 and learn less. Dump the woke classes and woke teachers and stick to the 3Rs.
Downsize the city and county government. Keep the LE and make sure the criminals stay in jail. Have the inmates clean the government buildings and maintain the parks and roadways just like in the past.
Roll back the property taxes to 2015 and deal with that budget for 5 years. Kick any government union out.
“I sympathize with some people, especially older people, who may own a house that has skyrocketed in value. , so their taxes have been raised. But just because they own a house doesn’t necessarily mean they have a lot of money to pay their property tax.”
Low income home owners in Florida can defer taxes till the home is sold.
Here’s how it works in my town. A multi million dollar school bond is proposed (it’s for the children ya know) It is placed on a ballot that only contains that measure. Offer no mailer or public notice of the measure, so most citizens are unaware of it except for school employees and their families who then vote ‘yes’. Bond passes. Homes get immediately re-appraised at a higher value. Rinse and repeat every few years.
