‘Poverty’ Nonprofit That Smears Conservatives Has Millions in Offshore Accounts, IRS Records Show
The Daily Signal ^ | July 9, 2025 | Tyler O'Neil

Despite its penurious name, the Southern Poverty Law Center has an endowment of more than $700 million, compensates leadership handsomely, and possesses more than $30 million in offshore accounts—likely in the Cayman Islands, its most recent IRS filing reveals.

“It’s very odd and frankly raises suspicion that a nonprofit organization would have accounts in places like the Cayman Islands, or as they reported $30 million in Central America,” Mat Staver, founder and chairman of the law firm Liberty Counsel, told The Daily Signal on Tuesday.

Here’s an idea: since non-profit status seems to be almost impossible to rescind once granted, once any 501(c)(3) organization is found to have ‘X’ dollars in liquid assets, it immediately loses that designation.

(Exceptions: hospitals, bona fide religious orgs)

Of course, I’d set the value of ‘X’ pretty low... like $10 million or so.

Can’t say I followed the details in the article.

Aside from civil lawsuits, is there an avenue for the DOJ to explore and shut down this horrid “non profit” scam?

I started talking about nonprofit corporation abuse here on FR over 15 years ago. The whole system needs to be dumped and rebooted. No 501’s unless you house, feed, clothe or give medical care to humans.

Or a ratio to what you take in and distribute. Lots of charities that pay 90% or more in salaries. It pays to do your due diligence before donating.
