Most Canadian citizens consider the United States the "greatest threat" to their country, according to a survey published Tuesday by the Pew Research Center.
Among Canadians, 59% said that the U.S. was the nation's greatest threat, as President Donald Trump continues to suggest that Canada should become the 51st American state.
Israelis are especially likely to name the U.S. as their country's most important ally, with 95% saying so in the survey...
• South Korea is second on the list where its citizens consider the U.S. its most important ally at 89%...

Well.
Anyone who is stupid enough to take those comments by Trump as a serious threat is a complete imbecile, and not a serious person. The exact same kind of person who would justify Iranian chants of “Death to America and Israel” as a simple cultural difference and not a real threat.
Exactly the same kind of person.
Taking offense at a swipe at your country is understandable.
Being a moron who goes on record to regard it as a serious threat to their country is as intelligent as any Leftist out there, which means, not intelligent.
Blindingly stupid, as a matter of fact
Saying things that supposedly make the country look bad isn't treason.
And how are people in other countries supposed to know when he is serious and when he isn't? Especially when people in other countries won't have the same level of exposure to him, and won't run him through the same filter as do many of his Supporters.
Or is there some statement where Trump himself came out and said he was only joking, and not to take his comments seriously? Because if he did that, then I would agree. It isn't fair for people in other countries to take him seriously. Heck, you can go through threads on Free Republic whenever Trump makes comments like that and find Freepers disagreeing about whether he is serious or not. Some will argue that he makes statements like that as a form of negotiation to pressure other countries into doing what he wants. But of course, if everybody knew he was just joking, it would be pretty useless as a negotiation tactic, wouldn't it?
It makes no difference if it is a negotiating tactic or not. It is irrelevant.
Only libtards would attempt to paint it as a serious threat because that is how they roll.
Worldwide, including your 25+ year Canadian Army officer “friend”. No surprise there.
Actually, I would argue that you have it exactly backwards. It is completely reasonable for people in any country to take seriously the statements of leaders in other countries about their own nation.
If Trump makes those comments about Canada, it is fair for Canadians to take those comments seriously. And if Iranians make those comments about the United States, it is fair for us to take those comments seriously.
You're the one endorsing a double standard where offensive statements made by other countries have to be taken seriously, but statements by our own President should be dismissed as "he was just joking".
If you're the leader of a country, and you make public statements about other countries, you own every word you chose to use. If the leader intended it to be taken as a joke, then he is free to clarify that point. To the best of my knowledge, Trump has not done so. In fact, whenever he is asked statements about Canada or Greenland, he simply doubles down.
You’re one of those people who see it as a real threat, I see. Given your posting history, that is about right.
No, I personally don't take it seriously. But then, I'm not Canadian, and have a better understanding of how our military and Constitutional system works. I know that we would never attack Canada despite the blatherings of a certain subset of MAGA who think it would be cool.
I'm just not going to blame people in other countries for taking the President of the United States at his word. They are entitled to do that.
And actually, this entire double-standard is annoying as hell. I think that if you are a public figure and you say something, you own it. When some Democrat says something that is ridiculous if taken literally, do we give them a pass and say "well, they didn't mean that", or "well, they must have been joking" or "we really shouldn't blow it out of proportion?" Or when Putin, or the Ayatollah, or any foreign leader says something we don't like if taken literally, do we minimize it and look for interpretations that aren't as bad?
Hell no. We hold them to the exact words they chose to use, as we should.
Now, I'm perfectly willing to accept the idea that someone can truly misspeak, and words can come out that they did not mean. And if that's the case, all they have to do is say so. Or hell, even have their official spokesperson say so. But that has not happened. And unless and until it does, I can't blame people in other countries for taking seriously things the President of the United States deliberately states publicly. Just as we take seriously the things their leaders may say about our country.
“Who is this Canada, and why should we care what it thinks?”
Best line of the day!
The Canadians big problem is they took President Trump’s annexation talk seriously. You have to understand it as humor being used to make a point. Canada’s political system is on thin ice. America may have to come to their rescue. Their situation may get serious enough that we may have to take Canada in for their survival. Then it will be no joke.
Canada is a pile of dog sheet, do we don’t want to step in it.
Humor is banned in Canada. Canada is an one party state. So they couldn't handle it when Trump was "trolling" them.
It's against the law to be a troll in Canada.
Ah. So you don’t take it seriously as a threat. You may be a bit smarter than you sound then.
Again, I like a lot of what Trump does, but sometimes he just says stupid sh*t that would have been better left unsaid.
He said other things that if they understood, would have given them the context.
Have an MP5 one, but have misplaced it ;^)
Well, our retarded red headed step brothers to the North are having thoughts and calculating conclusions???
I’m impressed
I’m sure Bondi has the evidence on her desk…right next to the Epstein files.
Trump is stabbed in the back continuously.
At this point, I wish he truly was a King.
Oops. Wrong thread. Apologies.
Their media tells them to be afraid, and they buy it — that is, they believe it, and their fears keep the media in business.
