Or, if he just hadn't said the stupid part in the first place, that additional understanding of the context --remarks of which many of them may be completely unaware -- wouldn't be needed.

Even with all the context you want to add, the comments were still demeaning/belittling even if they weren't meant seriously. Just flat-out a dumb thing to say unless he didn't really care whether he offended Canadians or not. Which I suspect is probably very close to the truth.

You have it exactly backwards. Your view that conducting a poll can constitute treason - for which the death penalty would be authorized - is insane. It would both violate the First Amendment and not even be consistent with the Constitutional definition of treason.

The entire point of the First Amendment - the very core of it - is protecting political speech, especially that considered decisive or disparaging by whoever is in power. Even aside from that, to which foreign "Enemies" does that poll extol or help? The purpose of Article II is to prevent the waging of War against the enemies of the country, or providing them aid and comfort. Those are actions, not mere words.

Well, I’m sorry you feel that way, but I do not see how stirring up enmity against the USA that presently really does not exist on a large scale is not an overt act giving aid and comfort to the enemies of the USA, per the definition of treason in Article 3 Section 3.

Treason against the United States shall consist only in levying war against them or in adhering to their enemies, giving them aid and comfort. No Person shall be convicted of treason unless on the testimony of two witnesses to the same overt act, or on confession in open court.
