The Secretary General of NATO pushes through criticism for his compliments for U.S. President Donald Trump, pointing to higher spending by the alliance’s members and noting this “would not have happened” without Trump pushing the matter.
America is “completely right” that NATO’s other members — Europe and Canada — had not been paying enough into the alliance, but that is now improving and its states are now heading towards equilibrium and President Trump is to thank for that, Secretary General Mark Rutte said. The remarks came in an interview with the New York Times at the weekend which tried very hard to get the Secretary General to state any agreement at all with the legacy media-authorised view on the alliance that, actually, President Trump is a threat to it.
This talking point was baked in before Trump even became President the first time around and lingers now, even in the face of NATO leader after NATO leader saying quite clearly that President Trump’s shock therapy has made NATO stronger, not weaker. Journalists also tried to tease Trump with this matter at last week’s NATO summit but, ultimately got a contemptuous brush-off.

NATO has long served as a pillar of American influence in Europe, both geopolitically and economically. The alliance ensures a captive market for U.S. arms manufacturers and the American worker, and it’s no coincidence that American presidents, especially Trump, have aggressively pushed for increased NATO spending.
Trump, ever the businessman, saw NATO as less a defensive pact and more a profit center — a pipeline of European money flowing into American defense contracts.
By pressuring allies to “pay their fair share,” Trump effectively boosted even further the demand for U.S. military exports. In that sense, yes — he made NATO great again, but not only for the EU’s defense. He made it great for Lockheed Martin, Raytheon, the broader American defense industry, the American worker and LOTS of taxes being paid to the US Government.
If Europe decided to leave NATO, the economic impact on the U.S. military-industrial complex, part of Americas economy, would be significant. That’s why, for Washington and Trump, NATO is not just about security — it’s about the economy, strategy, markets, and those continuing to maintain a global sphere of influence.
Greedy belligerent. I’ll bet he expects to double his money when the US dems return to bleed the Treasury once again.
Putin had the largest effect, but a President Trump really brought it home and sealed the deal.
Has there been any legislation passed for the current fiscal year in these countries explicitly spending more Defense money NOW, or do all the bills commit to achieving some undefined something by 2035?
