Elon Musk’s ‘America’ party could focus on a few pivotal congressional seats

The new US political party that Elon Musk has boasted about bankrolling could initially focus on a handful of attainable House and Senate seats while striving to be the decisive vote on major issues amid the thin margins in Congress.

Tesla and SpaceX’s multibillionaire CEO mused about that approach on Friday in a post on X, the social media platform he owns, as he continued feuding with Donald Trump over the spending bill that the president has signed into law. On Saturday, without immediately elaborating, the former Trump adviser announced on X that he had created the so-called America party.

“One way to execute on this would be to laser-focus on just 2 or 3 Senate seats and 8 to 10 House districts,” wrote Musk, who is the world’s richest person and oversaw brutal cuts to the federal government after Trump’s second presidency began in January. “Given the razor-thin legislative margins, that would be enough to serve as the deciding vote on contentious laws, ensuring they serve the true will of the people.”

Musk did not specify any seats he may be eyeing.

In another post on Friday, when the US celebrated the 249th anniversary of its declaration of independence from the UK, Musk published a poll asking his X followers whether he should advance on his previously stated idea of creating the America party to challenge both Republicans and Democrats. More than 65% of about 1.25m responses indicated “yes” as of Saturday morning.

If he could really elect 10 House members, it’s possible neither party would have a majority in the next Congress. Considering that narrow margin right now, if he had ten members right now, those members would hold the balance of power, assuming most were from current Republican districts.

Then again, this effort wouldn’t make a difference, if neither party is able to get to the 218 member majority .

Beyond the broader fiscal impact, he is particularly aggrieved by cuts to clean energy and electric vehicle subsidies — areas central to his businesses.

According to Musk, the legislation supports “industries of the past while severely damaging industries of the future.” He further labelled the spending initiative a “disgusting abomination.”

Their feud became more public early June when Musk posted that Trump had failed to acknowledge his role in the 2024 election victory, stating, “Without me, [Donald] Trump would have lost the election.”

The US president responded on his platform, Truth Social, suggesting the government could slash expenses by eliminating federal subsidies and contracts granted to Musk’s ventures: “The easiest way to save money in our Budget, Billions and Billions of Dollars, is to terminate Elon’s Governmental Subsidies and Contracts.”

The problem for third parties, is the lack of run-off elections in most states. Louisiana had them. Without the ability to force a run-off, many voters consider third parties a wasted vote. It will take a lot of money for this to work. Musk has the money, but not much politcal acumen.

Elon is going to find politics are not linear. You don't start at point A and get to point B - there are concessions, accommodations, agreements, appeasement along the way. I think he's built for solving math and engineering problems. You can't solve political issues by shipping code.

I suspect he will be frustrated and have another meltdown when something goes askew.

Elon’s meddling would make him defacto enemy of both parties and his businesses would suffer tremendously from future bills.

Elon with regards to the BBB caucuses with every Democrat and a handful of Republicans that voted against it.

Not sure that’s a third party, more like a turd party.

This is designed to take a few votes away and swing elections to democrats.
It’s offensive and I guess Elon can look forward to everyone on both sides boycotting his cars.

The same Dem party that burned his business and cars to the ground, the same party that put a bounty on his head, is the same political party that Elon wants to win next Nov, this is going to split the vote..its one thing if he wants to help elect America First conservatives to the GOP thats one thing I fully support that, but a whole new political party comprised of completely different people is only going to help the Dems win
