Canada brutally hits back at Trump's tariffs ultimatum with huge hike that could cripple struggling US industry

Canada has dramatically hiked duties on American steel imports after Donald Trump shut down trade talks.

The country imposed an import quota late Friday and if it is exceeded, certain US metal will face a new 50 percent surcharge.

Canada's Finance Minister, François-Philippe Champagne, said the government was acting to protect domestic industry from 'unjust US tariffs,' NBC News reported.

The response came hours after Trump posted on Truth Social about how Canada is a 'very difficult country to trade with.'

His reason for suspending trade negotiations came down to a tax Canada is set to impose on major tech companies starting Monday.

'Based on this egregious Tax, we are hereby terminating ALL discussions on Trade with Canada, effective immediately,' Trump wrote, adding that the levy 'is a direct and blatant attack on our Country.'

Last week, the finance minister said he would not delay the implementation of the digital services tax, which applies to any firm making more than $15 million from Canadian internet users.

The three percent tax will strike at the heart of American companies like Amazon, Google, Meta, Uber and Airbnb.

And because the tax is retroactive back to 2022, one tech lobbying group said American firms will soon have to pay up to $3 billion directly into Canada's treasury.

Canada has not ruled out further action to strike back at Trump for ending negotiations, with the government saying it 'remains prepared to take additional steps as needed.'

How Canada's hike on US steel imports will affect the industry, which has been struggling for years, is yet to be seen.

US Steel Corporation, once one of the most valuable companies in the world, just merged with Japan's Nippon Steel earlier this month after years of declining sales.

Our trade with Canada has been mostly one way. I doubt additional tariffs by them will either cripple or devastate the US economy.

Canada imports waaaaay more steel then the US exports to them.
This is just whistling past the graveyard for a Canadian economy that needs the US a hell of a lot more then the US needs them.

We’ve all heard of “war games”. And most of us understand their purpose.

I believe Trump’s team was doing a lot of “tarrif games” to try out all this “tarrif stuff” to prepare for various responses by other countries. So I suspect Trump saw this coming.

If you get my drift. 😉

LOL...let them grow their own Canadian Amazon, Google, Meta, Uber and Airbnb. Good luck with that, Canucks!

Those taxes on those companies will be collected 100% from Canadians. How’s that for sensible?

I’m now 76. It took me almost this long to learn that Canada and Mexico are not our friends. Neither are the islands in the Caribbean. I’m a slow learner. They are parasites after America’s wealth and the money belonging to Americans.

The USA has the ability to economically destroy Canada due to the size of our economy verses theirs. We know it and they know it.

Digital services providers in the US should just cut off Canadian users.

It’s surprising that Canada tries to play these games. They aren’t going to win.

I think it would be a whole lot better If Canada negotiated with Trump in good faith. Otherwise, we have not yet begun to fight! It could be a messy affair.

They've already got their own Amazon, it's called Shopify.

Most of the people here in western Canada would disagree with that. Nobody has more disdain for Ottawa than we do.

Exactly. And that is exactly the point President Trump was trying to make with his tariffs but people were too stupid to understand that. Of course, there was a lot of hatred of him involved in their propaganda too.
