Andrew Cuomo is staying on the New York City mayoral election ballot — a move that prompted critics to slam the ex-gov as a “spoiler” candidate.
Sources confirmed that Cuomo will not decline to run on an independent ballot line, ahead of a Friday deadline to pull his name from the November ticket.
Cuomo’s defiant stance comes as he hemorrhages union support after his stunning loss to socialist contender Zohran Mamdani in Tuesday’s Democratic primary – and amid widespread consternation that he’ll give the Queens assemblyman an easier path to Gracie Mansion.
“Cuomo’s name in the race is fantastic for Mamdani,” said Sal Albanese, a former Brooklyn city councilman. “A thousand percent Cuomo is playing the spoiler. It makes Mamdani’s task of getting elected mayor much easier.”
The former governor conceded Mamdani’s win, but played coy on whether he would continue to run on his “Fight and Deliver” ballot line in the general election, saying he wanted to see the full results of the ranked-choice contest first.
A campaign source Friday confirmed that Cuomo – who faced a deadline of 5 p.m. to effectively withdraw from November’s ballot and growing calls to drop out – will not decline his independent line.
It remains unclear whether Cuomo will actually mount an active general election campaign. Sources close to Cuomo’s camp previously said the former governor almost certainly would not.
Even if he doesn’t actively campaign, staying on the general election ballot could siphon votes from Mayor Eric Adams, who will also be running on an independent line.
“If Cuomo stays in the race he splits the anti-Mamdani vote and helps Mamdani,” said state Conservative Party Chairman Gerard Kassar, a Dyker Heights resident...
Lawyer Jim Walden is also running as an independent candidate in the general election.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
Could be Cuomo is negotiating with Mamdani and Adams, waiting for the better offer.
If he sways it in any way to the muslim, he’s done the state and NYC more damage than any politician in history. He will forever be remembered as a pile of it.
Cuomo will get out when he’s paid enough. He saw it work for Bernie Sanders.
Cuomo is the kind of jerk that would get evicted..land he sets the place on fire on the way out.
Cuomo is forever downgraded, b/c of his Covid decisions, but even with all that known, he still seems more articulate and competent a politician than Addams. Maybe Addams should consider other choices.
waiting for the payoff - its the democrat way
Career politicians are such ego-centric aholes. They can never just go to a job in the civilian sector. No, they have such a need to control. This is why I don’t trust any politician from a school board council member to the WH.
No Ranked Choice Voting in the general election in NYC.
Top vote total wins, even if it is well under 50%.
New York and Connecticut are unusual in that they allow multiple parties to endorse the same candidate.
Mamdani may be on multiple lines:
Conservative Party: Frequently endorses Republican candidates and is a consistent presence on general election ballots.
Working Families Party: A progressive party that often cross-endorses Democrats and has a strong base among labor and progressive activists.
Green Party: Focuses on environmental and social justice issues, though its ballot access has varied depending on recent election results.
Libertarian Party: Advocates for civil liberties and limited government, though its ballot status can fluctuate.
Independence Party: Once a significant player, but its influence has waned and its ballot access has been inconsistent in recent cycles.
(Liberal Party lost ballot access long ago)
If both Cuomo and Eric Adams run campaigns, what helps Mamdani.
Supporters of Ranked Choice Voting getting hoisted on their own petards.
You left out the Right to Life Party, which was once a presence on the ballot.
“Supporters of Ranked Choice Voting getting hoisted on their own petards.”
If RCV was in place for the general election the non Mamdani voters could give their lower preferences to other candidates and have at least a chance to stop Mamdani
As it is Mamdani will probably win with less than 50% of the vote
Cuomo hasnt lived in NYC in 30 years. Oh yeah he lived relatively close by in Westchester, but he didnt live in NY. Bill Clinton has spent more time in the City in the last 25 years than Cuomo. So I say it should be Adams. Curtis is a guy who loved the City and has done a lot for it and he’s not dumb by any means, but he’s not a cut out to be mayor.
Good overall summary of the main players. Sounds like maybe you live or have lived in that area.
I am hearing that some in the GOP are trying to convince connections to Give Curtis Sliwa a job within the Trump Administration, to provide a sort of Golden Parachute, and have him ‘willingly’ leave that Mayor’s race, allowing Addams to focus on winning over the young Muslim Socialist.
If Sliwa is getting such offers, I hope he takes it seriously.
I like Sliwa, but his chances are slim and none, and slim just left town.
Oh, right....
This is almost as good as Biden’s debate performance.
So let’s say the Democrat vote gets split three ways:
Crazy Muslim Guy gets 26%
Cuomo gets 15%
Adams gets 24%
Sliwa (the Republican) gets the same 28% he got in 2021.
Guess who wins...
Maybe he WANTS mumdani to *win*.
Cuomo doesn't care who wins.
He will help the highest bidder, Mamdani or Adams.
