What Leaders Can Learn From Chick-fil-A’s Uphill Battle of Rebuilding Trust With Customers

A couple of years ago, a new Chick-fil-A restaurant was under construction in my neighborhood. Now, Chick-fil-A and I go way back. I went to high school in Georgia. I well remember the Chick-fil-A in the local mall (well, the only mall) in our small town. While the chicken sandwiches weren’t exactly a revelation, they were a nice change of pace from my usual McDonald’s cheeseburgers.

Although I no longer eat chicken, I followed the construction progress of my neighborhood Chick-fil-A restaurant closely. However, it’s what happened when a neighbor posted a photo and an update about our soon-to-be open Chick-fil-A that most caught my attention.

Someone commented on Nextdoor that they would never set foot in this new Chick-fil-A—or any other. The reason: “The company supports anti-LGBTQ groups and laws.” That was news to me. With my curiosity piqued, I decided to do some research, and what I discovered surprised me.

To begin, Chick-fil-A is famously closed on Sundays, and there’s a reason for that. The founder, S. Truett Cathy, who passed away in 2014, was a devout Southern Baptist. It was his decision to close Chick-fil-A restaurants on Sundays so that employees could “rest and worship if they choose.” That business model has worked well for the company since its founding in 1967.

However, Chick-fil-A got tangled up in the politics of same-sex marriage more than a decade ago. News reports asserted that the company had donated many millions of dollars to groups considered to be anti-gay. The reported donations sparked widespread protests, boycotts, and criticism at the time.

However, Chick-fil-A stopped donating to such organizations years ago.

I had my last there when they flipped the finger to the Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Salvation Army and started donating to LGBT and a shelter for runaways that was founded by a homo-pedo priest.

Their betrayal was worse because when the LGBTs went after them, Christians rallied HARD for them. And then after the old man died, they decided to expand into college campuses, so they went even more woke. And they got rid of cole slaw in favor of dirt flavored kale to make young college chicks happy. The final straw was them telling us to shine BLM shoes.

I like their chicken, but KFC has their fries beat by a mile.

I will never really trust Chick-fil-A after being lectured by their CEO

I have not set foot in their restaurants since then

I’d go but it would be a rare circumstance these days

Oh well

If more businesses follow their model of declining product quality, then what I coined a few years ago as “appallingly low meal quality expectations” by the public will continue on a disturbing trajectory.

Note: ZERO sarcasm in that comment.

I quit going when they flipped and confirmed that with the shoe polishing episode.

Stopped going there when I heard that their founder literally groveled before the Race Card and virtue signaled washing black mens feet to apologize for slavery.

I grew up in the south and Chic fil A was our family go-to for occasional fast food, as my mom hated McDonalds. Something changed about 8-10 years ago that I started noticing every time I ate there, I got horrible GERD. It didn’t use to happen, so I think they changed their frying oil to some toxic blend that my gut doesn’t like. They still have the best lemonade and their peach milkshakes are sublime, but I don’t eat there anymore.

The story is crap - what happened was Chick fil A donated to some churches that preached the Bible as is - - and the ‘gay community’ being thin skinned on everything - took exception.

The last time and I literally mean the last time, I ate there, my bun was shiny. Like it had been lightly sprayed with WD40. It tasted okay. So I ate it.

I almost made it home, when I had to pull over. My passenger who had eaten with me, got out of the car and began vomiting.

Christians rallied HARD for them

Yeah, we did...I had not been there for years but went because they were so vilified, as did a lot of people.
They they turned their back on the folks who defended them...They chase after a small LOUD and stupid minority. They have lost their way.

Now they are more costly, practice shrinkflation and I haven’t been there in a couple years now, especially after the whuhan madness.

Sad. But oh well...I cook better than they do.

They are already at work. Your Sunday purchase may help put milk on their table.

Yes and no. As a teenager I worked for the grocery store on most Sundays because, yes, we were already open. But there were a lot less workers scheduled on Sundays because there were a lot less customers on Sundays. So the shopping behavior of many customers (I.e. enough of them not shopping on Sundays) does have an effect even if it’s not absolute.

I was also one of those who stood up for them when the Gaystapo targeted Chick Fil A.

They then stabbed their many loyal fans in the back kowtowing to BLM narrative

They are dead to me

Chick-fil-A is just like Disney; trying to play both sides of the fence. They use the faith based customers for profit and support the woke agenda, at the same time. Nothing but hypocrites.

“So, out of the seven days of the week, why did you choose to honor Sunday with this distinction?”

Sunday is the day I celebrate the resurrection.

“Businesses of all kinds should stay out of politics all together.”

That makes some sense, especially for a publicly traded company; even then it is not a constitutional requirement.

For a privately owned company it is up to the owners to say what, if anything, they want to pronounce. Getting on the right side of a 90/10 issue can be good for business.

They can’t unshine the shoes of a BLM “leader” shined by the CEO.

Same here. I hadn’t been there very often at all. When they had that big Christians go to Chick-fil-A day, it was a traffic jam for two blocks in every direction where I was. And I kept going… I’d go two or 3 miles out of my way to get a big ice tea and a sandwich before a road trip. And then they decided to throw in their lot with millennial kale eating women, and those heathen emissaries of Babylon.
