Sir Keir Starmer warned there was a risk of the Middle East crisis spiralling beyond the region after Donald Trump ordered US planes and submarines to attack Iran's nuclear programme.
The Prime Minister urged all sides to return to negotiations but said he had taken 'all necessary measures' to protect British interests in the region if the conflict escalates.
He spoke out ahead of a Cobra meeting this afternoon, as Tehran vowed to retaliate for the strike on three facilities in the heart of the country.
Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds confirmed this morning that the UK was told about the airstrike in advance but played no role in it.
But he said it would be 'naïve' not to expect the UK to face a heightened risk from the already high risk of Iran-sponsored terrorism in the wake of what was happening.
The PM this morning said the attack was justified because Iran's nuclear programme was 'a grave threat to international security'.
But speaking later to broadcasters at his Chequers country retreat, the Prime Minister said there was a 'risk of escalation' adding: 'That's a risk to the region. It's a risk beyond the region, and that's why all our focus has been on de-escalating, getting people back around to negotiate what is a very real threat in relation to the nuclear programme.'
Efforts are underway to get trapped Britons out of Israel, as Tehran launched a barrage of revenge missiles at the country.
Mr Reynolds said it would be 'hours, not days' before they could be evacuated, with delays so far caused by Israeli airspace being closed.
The Foreign Office has asked British nationals in Israel to register their interest in a Government-organised flight out of the country early next week.

This is like shutting the barn door after the horses have got out. But for heaven's sake, you do need eventually to shut the damned door.
“That’s like punching someone in a bar and then stepping back and saying everybody stay calm and let’s talk.”
No it’s not. It’s like finally punching back at a guy in a bar who’s been picking on you everywhere you try to go and live a peaceful life and saying ‘enough’ after asking him for years and years to please stop with the threats. THEN hitting him to the ground and saying big me again, and do it worse next time. I want to live in peace
They strike back and they get flattened. This is payback for 40 some-odd years of their crap. Iran is the reason Islam is such a PITA today.
This fuse was lit when I was still in college, you ambulating, knighted-for-nothing, useless, pathetic dildo. Go kick the UK’s sad, sorry can down the road.
“...confirmed this morning that the UK was told about the airstrike in advance ...”
But not the Dems.
That chump would probably rather see mushroom clouds over London or Tel Aviv.
> Starmer should know better. <
Starmer is just trying to stay relevant. The UK is now a second-rate power slipping into third-rate status. But Starmer likes to pretend it’s still 1885.
>> The Foreign Office has asked British nationals in Israel to register their interest in a Government-organised flight out of the country early next week.
FOREIGN OFFICER: Would you be interested in a flight out?
BRIT IN ISRAEL: Where to?
FOREIGN OFFICER: The UK, of course!
BRIT IN ISRAEL: Thanks! I’ll stay. Fewer threats from Muslims here!
Yea we should have waited till they destroyed israel.../s
Starmer and Macron already have their hands full with their large Muslim populations. They better worry about first.

Does this mean the EU - NATO enterprise in Ukraine is derailed?
Tehran vowed to retaliate for the strike on three facilities”
as if, They aren’t going to do sh*t.
“This is a Line of Death, you cross it, you die!”
“Ok, you cross this line, you die!”
“Cross this line, you die!
“Cross this line, you die!”
“Alright, that’s it, you come knocking on my door, I’m not coming out...Nyah!”
While somebody shut this clown up! What’s he doing to prevent Iran from getting nukes?
Thank goodness we’ve been diligent on the borders over the last 20 years and nobody is here that isn’t fully vetted and ... oh crap.
Like Carney in Canada, reprobate Keir is a Davos install and only does and says those things he is told to say by his WEF masters.
Like for example how there is never any ‘crisis’ when Muslim grooming gangs operate with impunity above the law in Manchester.
