Sir Keir Starmer warned there was a risk of the Middle East crisis spiralling beyond the region after Donald Trump ordered US planes and submarines to attack Iran's nuclear programme.
The Prime Minister urged all sides to return to negotiations but said he had taken 'all necessary measures' to protect British interests in the region if the conflict escalates.
He spoke out ahead of a Cobra meeting this afternoon, as Tehran vowed to retaliate for the strike on three facilities in the heart of the country.
Business Secretary Jonathan Reynolds confirmed this morning that the UK was told about the airstrike in advance but played no role in it.
But he said it would be 'naĂŻve' not to expect the UK to face a heightened risk from the already high risk of Iran-sponsored terrorism in the wake of what was happening.
The PM this morning said the attack was justified because Iran's nuclear programme was 'a grave threat to international security'.
But speaking later to broadcasters at his Chequers country retreat, the Prime Minister said there was a 'risk of escalation' adding: 'That's a risk to the region. It's a risk beyond the region, and that's why all our focus has been on de-escalating, getting people back around to negotiate what is a very real threat in relation to the nuclear programme.'
Efforts are underway to get trapped Britons out of Israel, as Tehran launched a barrage of revenge missiles at the country.
Mr Reynolds said it would be 'hours, not days' before they could be evacuated, with delays so far caused by Israeli airspace being closed.
The Foreign Office has asked British nationals in Israel to register their interest in a Government-organised flight out of the country early next week.

“there was a risk of the Middle East crisis spiralling beyond the region after Donald Trump ordered US planes and submarines to attack Iran’s nuclear programme.”
Uh...they have ALREADY spiralled into your region, you idiot.
AttaBoi, Pansy. Like clockwork
They’re running out of missiles and living in bunkers. 🙄
He should warn Supreme Leader of atomization risk if he continues to FA.
Yes
Keir, go back to your corner and quiver in fear, you gutless, virtue-signaling coward.
Of course Iran says what it says, and they will mount a response, and they know Trump will expect a response, so they will try to walk the line between a face-saving response and not provoke Trump into more action.

A lot magical thinking in this war. Before the planes made it back to base, in the same announcement regarding the bombing, Trump said “now is the time for peace”. Now Starmer says anyone hitting back when attacked would be escalating things.
That’s like punching someone in a bar and then stepping back and saying everybody stay calm and let’s talk.
iran has been spiraling into other regions for far too long…
nip it. nip it in the bud.
We’re so used to military industry running these things we don’t imagine what Trump is even stating
The military industry hasn’t touched Iran in the decades since Carter started this thing, acting against the regime, harboring their enemy, nothing to do with our constitution.
I don’t know exactly what is going on in this action, I can say that we as a country have been told to be very afraid of the Iranian regime since Carter pissed them off royally
We expect Trump to sit around doing whatever some military industry rep “presidential advisor” says effectively prolonging this thing and effectively earning him and his buddies a lot of dough
But those guys are gone. And Iran has always been way beyond what interested them
When Trump says we are not putting up with our people being killed that’s what he means.
Nailed it 👍
LOL...
Trump just settled that hash.
And the UK’s Deep State is not amused.
Interesting, an angry poster who suddenly became very active lately has had their posts removed. Their comments still in the history but not finding their posted articles.
Well bye, I guess.
That's one of the greatest excuses for cowards. What if they fight back? What if they hit me?
Everyone knows there's only one way to deal with a bully. Eventually, you will have to fight back.
You can look at Starmer and see that he's a coward. The entire UK leadership is cowering at the threat of domestic Muslims while they take over entire cities and groom and rape little girls.
He is right that war can be unpredictable and have bad unintended consequences that we should try to avoid. But negotiating a weak resolution that allows Iran to cheat and ultimately restart its program has bad consequences too.
