Alleged Killer of Minnesota State Rep. Texted Family: ‘Dad Went to War’

The alleged killer of Minnesota state Rep. Melissa Hortman (D) and her husband allegedly texted his family afterward, saying, “Dad went to war last night,” according to TMZ.

The 57-year-old shooting suspect, Vance Boelter, allegedly dressed like a police officer and drove a car equipped with lights which resembled those of a police cruiser as he carried out his attacks.

Hortman and her husband were killed in the wee hours of Saturday morning. Minnesota state Sen. John Hoffman (D) and his wife were shot in their home as well, but both are expected to survive.

Breitbart News reported Boelter was captured Sunday night roughly 57 miles where Hortman and her husband were killed in their home.

Didn’t Ray Epps text his son: “I orchestrated this whole thing”. And then the FBI decided that it meant nothing and he was just an innocent guy?

Here is the link to the FBI Affidavit on Boelter.

I recommend all read it. It lays out the facts of the case much better than any of the news media have done.

I recall reading (while he was still on the loose) that he had five kids at the primary home. The motivation is very murky for this spree, starting out with two relatively moderate Democrats who apparently had voted with Republicans recently. Not that I believe any real MAGA type people would be inclined to shoot political opponents, but in theory, would one not be inclined to start at the leftist end of the Democrats? So it appears that the motivation (if any rational motive can be ascribed) was to discipline party dissidents.

It also struck me as quite odd that the police would work out within half an hour of shots fired at location A that they should now proceed to location B where they interrupted the perp in his fatal attacks. The most obvious reason to explain this very astute deduction might be words spoken to the first victims (who may have been able to relate those to police at their scene) or words in writing left there.

Given the fact the alleged shooter was now unemployed after several years of patronage appointments, you would have to conclude an obvious motive would be revenge against people who had withdrawn that patronage (for whatever reasons), so perhaps it was just a general hit list against the state’s governing party and he just happened to start off with two lawmakers who were relatively moderate Democrats. Or as some here have said, he was put up to it and the interruption was not that big of a surprise to somebody behind the scenes.

I don’t believe the suspect’s supposed MAGA tendencies will gain traction with the general public, if an intellect as dim as mine cannot be fooled by it, the average clever person will dismiss it instantly.

Great link—lots of info.

Thanks.

All we are missing is proof (no speculation) of motive.

Good post—the lost patronage issue seems to make the most sense for me.

For those who remember their history it reminds me of the 1881 Garfield assassination by a rejected seeker of a federal job.

I can imagine a right-wing zealot shooting a politician, if he thought the soapbox and ballot box options failed. I do NOT see him shooting the politician's spouse. Even mobsters in the day of a coherent code avoided that.

When referring to the general public, you do realize this is Minnesota we’re talking about - right?

They’ll believe or buy into whatever the media tells them - IOW, it was an angry violence-prone gun-crazy white guy who voted for Trump.

So whoever had his phone texted. Same with his “apartment buddies”. He did leave his car, guns, and everything else for the cops to find.
