California proposal to make it a misdemeanor for officers to cover their faces prompts federal criticism

Local, state, and federal law enforcement officers who cover their faces while conducting official business could face a misdemeanor charge in California under a new proposal announced Monday.

If approved, the bill would require all law enforcement officials to show their faces and be identifiable by their uniform, which should carry their name or other identifier. It would not apply to the National Guard or other troops and it would exempt SWAT teams and officers responding to natural disasters.

The Department of Homeland Security called the proposal “despicable” in a post on X, saying ICE officers are facing a “more than 400 percent increase in assault.”

State Sen. Scott Wiener, a Democrat representing San Francisco, and State Sen. Jesse Arreguin, a Democrat representing Berkeley and Oakland, said the proposal seeks to boost transparency and public trust in law enforcement. It also looks to protect against people trying to impersonate law enforcement, they said.

Its a standard leftist/deep-state trick, of course

But they make an unintended point

Cops who are enforcing the law, which has supposedly been made by representative, democratic institutions, should have no fear of doing their jobs, which is the will of the people.

Yet our society, and neo-marxist politics, are now so corrupt - large segments of the population (and government) actually prefer lawlessness.

Good idea. Our public servants must be held accountable. Personally. Secret police belong in dictatorships.

Make it a felony for legislators to introduce stupid legislation.

That, and make the legislators accountable for any harm that comes to the law-enforcement officers that get harmed.

If somebody aids and abets a criminal, that someone will be held just as accountable as the criminal. The legislators would be encouraging the bad actors to do bad. If the legislators are not going to be held accountable, then the proposed bill should get 100% votes against.

After seeing a lot of them protesting last weekend, I think it should be a law that they remain covered. Not a babe in the bunch.

“State Sen. Scott Wiener, a Democrat representing San Francisco”

The jokes write themselves.

Make it a crime to cover your face while protesting.

Probably unconstitutional for a state to place such restrictions on federal officers.

This is the direction that California is taking. Let them pass this and watch any remotely competent law enforcement official leave the state. It will create a downward cycle.

So..
does that mean that CA is getting rid of qualified immunity?

Or, that LEOs will now have to live under the same laws everybody else does> No more LEO carve out/ exemptions?

Key point: it would exempt SWAT teams.

Swat teams that would be used by an authoritarian government.

Florida and Texas probably need more LEO due to growth. I liked San Diego but no way I could live in LA.

The masks are primarily being used to prevent doxxing of the agents, their families, and for tracking the agents movements by paid “resisters”. Should an agent be accountable to a bystander, or the whole world as soon as their face and personal information is on the internet?

It ain’t the 50’s no more. To conflate masked agents to “secret police” status is exaggeration. Do you think undercover agents are “secret police” and part of a dictatorship also?
IMHO. Freegards.

The Democrats want to dox all officers AND THEIR FAMILIES, so they can be threatened, attacked, and terrorized.

Rule of law? Democrats are terrorist supporters.

Probably unconstitutional for a state to place such restrictions on federal officers.

States don’t get to dictate how federal laws enforcement does its job. Trying to enforce this on a fed would be interfering with the performance of their duties and grounds for arrest and prosecution of whatever local cop tried. This is just more grandstanding, it’s couldn’t be applied to ICE agents. It’d be like trying to apply gun control laws to federal agents, the states don’t ave that authority.
