The pullout of US diplomat families was a major tipoff. The Iranians should have been at defcon 5. But they ignored it just like Israelis ignored Hamas military training in public.
I would like to think that this was all scripted as the author suggests but honestly I think Trump really did want to continue to negotiate instead of attacking. I think that Netanyahu had the right idea. Anything you can negotiate will be worthless. Same in Ukraine.

I disagree. Even Trump’s public comments since the fighting began, give it away. That doesn’t mean Trump didn’t want to see a peace deal. It just means he was always realistic about the chances of success and had a deadline in mind all along. Israel likely relied on U.S. diplomatic and intelligence support to pull this off. I don’t think it’s realistic to believe that Netanyahu would just go rogue and leave the U.S. out of the loop. And if Trump felt he and the country were being disrespected by Israel’s government, he would let it be known.
