WATCH: IDF Destroys Iran’s Last F-14s from Pre-Revolution Era

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) published footage Monday of an Israeli Air Force (IAF) drone destroying two American F-14s that were sold to Iran before the Islamic Revolution in 1979. They were on the ground.

The Times of Israel reported:

An Israeli Air Force drone struck and destroyed two Iranian F-14 fighter jets at an airport in Tehran, IDF Spokesman Brig. Gen. Effie Defrin reveals in a press conference.

The US-made F-14 Tomcats were supplied to Iran before the 1979 Islamic Revolution and are believed to be the last ones still in operation.

The F-14s were among many targets hit by Iran Monday evening, including the Iranian state broadcaster and other military targets and institutions of the Iranian regime.

F14s still in operation? One of the reasons they left US service was the high maintenance requirements. It’s hard to imagine Iran had a high end maintenance program.

They were sold F-14A’s I’m guessing equipped with the TF-30 engine.

Dangerous if you yaw the aircraft because the reduced airflow would make the engine stall (engine on the side of that yaw direction).

This is what killed Kara “Revlon” Hultgreen on approach to the carrier.

She yawed left to correct, left engine stalled and the aircraft rolled left.

Backseater was ejected first per sequencing and was injured. She was not able to escape before the aircraft hit the water, IIRC.

There were quite a few Iranian A&P guys in my college back in the day. The Persians were very diligent students compared to the partying Pakistanis and Saudis.

I think the bigger gaffe is that the article says the aircraft were hit by Iran, when they were, in fact, hit by Israel.
