The former first minister rebuked the actor for remarks about her impact on Scottish arts, calling them ‘baseless rubbish’
Nicola Sturgeon has branded the Hollywood star Rupert Everett “deeply misogynistic” after he called her a “witch” and claimed she ruined the arts in Scotland.
Everett, 66, known for My Best Friend’s Wedding and the voice of Prince Charming in Shrek 2 and Shrek the Third, said the world of Scottish arts has become more parochial since the SNP came to power.
The actor moved to Glasgow from England aged 18 to work at the Citizens Theatre in the Gorbals in the late 1970s and described it as “the best period of my life” in an interview with The Herald.
Everett contrasted the global outlook of Philip Prowse, Giles Havergal and Robert David MacDonald, the triumvirate who ran The Citz between 1969 and 2004, and the perceived insular nature of theatre in modern Scotland.
He said: “It was a national European theatre … it never ran at a loss. It presented an uncompromising array of work to people that it never patronised.
“As soon as the witch Sturgeon came into power everything changed in Scottish arts and everything had to be about being Scottish.”
Forthcoming productions include Small Acts of Love, set in Lockerbie in the wake of the 1988 aeroplane bombing, and a retrospective about Close Theatre, which was Glasgow’s “first unofficial gay bar”.
There is also a new production of The Glass Menagerie, the Tennessee Williams play set in St Louis; Sweat, set in a rust belt town in Pennsylvania; and the English actor Kieran Hodgson impersonating “a bunch of old prospectors and former presidents” in a stand-up set called Voice of America.
Writing on Instagram, Sturgeon said: “What is it with [some] men who can’t disagree with a woman without resorting to deeply misogynistic tropes? His substantive point is baseless rubbish too.”
In May, Sturgeon revealed she had received more “misogynistic abuse” over the her support for trans rights than any other in her political career.
He was being kind. The word he should’ve used rhymes with witch, but starts with a “B”…
Everett is a queen. They feel that way about most breeder women.
That’s correct.
Here for the Monty Python references ;-)
Last time i saw a mouth like hers it had a fish hook in it.
Is it a slur if it’s true?
The weird thing is he had a six year affair with Paula Yates, while she was married to Bob Geldof. I don’t not understand what all these men see in Paula Yates.
Awa', ye bluidy sassenach.
If you call her a witch, and she responds that you are deeply misogynistic…. SHE’S A WITCH!
Does she weigh as much as a duck?
What else floats? LOL!
