A Detroit high school student who was detained by federal agents last month was denied a request to pause his deportation, according to his attorney.
The Michigan Immigrant Rights Center, which represents 18-year-old Maykol Bogoya-Duarte, said it received a notice from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on Wednesday.
"While we are angry and sad about this decision, we are heartened by the overwhelming support for Maykol shown by so many of you — fellow students, educators, neighbors, friends, faith leaders, community members, elected officials, and the DPSCD Board of Education. In the words of Maykol's mother, 'mil mil gracias,'" the center said in a statement posted on social media.
Authorities say on May 20, the teen was on his way to Lake Erie Metropark with three classmates on a school field trip when Rockwood police pulled him over. Police say the officer had trouble communicating with him in English and called border patrol. During the investigation, the federal agent discovered Bogoya-Duarte was in the U.S. illegally, resulting in his arrest.

18 is still an adult even though he’s probably older.
Deport him. He’s an illegal, not some poor high school student.
An almost high school graduate who can’t speak English. A mother who is still in the country. How long have both been in the US?
So many questions so little answers from the media, most likely on purpose.
“A Detroit high school student... who (the officer) had trouble communicating with him in English.”
Is he an aspiring rapper?
Get out and stay out!
Yeh...the communication is the tip off...something is very wrong with this “fairy tale”.
Doesn’t speak English well, probably can read English, probably doesn’t have a valid drivers license, probably in his 20s, etc.
My thoughts exactly!
“The Michigan Immigrant Rights Center,“
There is an org that needs to be looked into.
More like Undocumented Immigrant Right Center.
If undocumented immigrants or migrants were here legally they would be actual immigrants, and they wouldn’t need democrats to show them how to circumvent our immigration laws
I think an earlier report said he’d been here since he was 7. What?
the officer had trouble communicating with him in English
Maykol Bogoya-Duarte, 18, who arrived in the United States 2 ½ years ago,
Nevermind. Must’ve been a different one....there are so many. lol
This “heartbreak” could all be avoided if the families would self deport. But the $$ are too good so they would rather roll the dice and live in fear. They made their beds...
Take a couple of suitcases filled with that overwhelming support with you when you go.
Makes you wonder if the person who runs that group is related to some federal district judge, doesn’t it?
A heavy equipment contractor we used a couple years ago had a youngish employee (20ish) who went thru local schools and graduated, but could not speak English. It is why we should REQUIRE total immersion in English.
