For all the insults that Mr. Musk and Mr. Trump traded on Thursday, don’t be surprised if they make up again days from now. In the meantime, they both benefit.
Elon Musk was once known for doing things. The entrepreneur reached a new peak of fame on Thursday for saying things. It was mostly bad things about President Trump.
The spat was revelatory, it was epic, it was historic, at least according to the thousands of earnest and excited commentaries that were instantly published.
It was also a well-timed outburst.
Mr. Musk and Mr. Trump did not have a feud five days ago and might not have a feud five days from now. Until proved otherwise, all of this is theater. Think of it as the political version of professional wrestling. For a few hours, everyone was diverted by the spectacle of a brawl between the world’s richest man and its most powerful person.
Mr. Trump took a break from tariffs and deportations. For Mr. Musk, the episode was even more valuable. His wealth comes from the promise that Tesla, his electric car company, will own a significant slice of the self-driving future. The launch of Tesla’s robotaxi business is next week in Austin. Texas. Skepticism abounds. The more attention it gets, the bigger a disappointment it could be.
Mr. Musk’s SpaceX business is even more problematic. For all its promise to set up colonies on Mars, it is having trouble with the basics. The ninth flight test of SpaceX’s Starship program a few days ago saw both the reusable booster exploding and, 40 minutes later, the rocket itself blowing up...

Thank you very much and God bless you.
It's going to be the biggest defamation case in History.
And President Trump is selling the car, too.
Exactly and I fully expect them to make up pretty soon.
What does selling the car mean?
I don’t think they will. Trump accused of pedophilia by Musk and Musk calling for impeachment, Trump won’t forgive that.
He’s done with Musk.
He bought the Red Tesla to support Musk...with his own money. It was in the news...Trump said he’s probably going to sell it.
Who gets custody of X?
Wait and watch.
He should donate the Tesla. Would look better.
Why...he paid for it with his own money. Look better for who?? No one really cares about the car.
Like the jumbo jet the talk will be “billionaire Trump gets celebrity boost to the used car value selling his Tesla.”
True, what does he care?
One of last year’s classic car calendars had a beautiful end of the 50s Cadillac and the line at the bottom said: Previous Owner, Frank Sinatra.
Bet it added some bucks to the luxury car dealer’s price.
Sometimes both of them really need to step back from their massive egos.
Selling it now really doesn’t hurt Musk, does it?
BUT...it sends a message...
Selling the car is fine as long as it isn’t for this petty reason.
Maybe musk is short on funds and has cut a deal with Soros, China or Russia or other foreign gov’t for billions if he will help take Trump down. Send musk back to Africa.
Well, when I look at Trump and Musk, I see some shared traits and kindred spirits.
They both are dreamers of big new things. Trump is mostly into real estate development, while Musk dreams of Mars, HyperLoop tunnels, StarLink, SpaceX, Tesla robotic cabs, etc.
Neither of them is much concerned about what people think or say about each other. Both of them do not tolerate fools and idiots. Both enjoy exposing hypocrites and making critics appear to be foolish.
Musk is smarter, richer, his social skills are far less, his morals (if measured by the number of baby mommy's) is less.
Again, I think that they will get back on the same page in the not too distant future.
Lots of fake speculation by the NYT. Article is worthless. They don't know anything about rocket technology. It was a test flight, and the booster and rocket were put through stress testing that expected them to fail and be lost. For example, purposely leaving off heat tiles and changing attitude thrusts to induce spin and stress, that would not occur on a production version. Same with the booster, forcing additional stresses on the engines that would not, and weren't done on previous boosters that returned successfully. SpaceX got expected results, while stress testing a test vessel before moving on to the next version. All this has nothing to do with Elon Musk's politics.
Some of the same applies to Tesla. My opinion is that this feud has more to do with distracting the public and news media from something else much worse going on. Maybe we're all screwed.
