I have to agree with you, the Soviet Union was not and the problem is that everyone tries to make the argument that Russia is the same as the Soviet Union which is just not true.
If the Soviet Union were still in control they would have never allowed Ukraine to break free or any of the other satellite nations, and they didn't.
/ But if Russia was like the Soviet Union, they would have never gone to the International Community to seek a peaceful resolution to the threat Russia considered NATO expansion into Ukraine presented to Russia.

Yes, but always in retaliation for broken promises they have verbally received & believed that they would be honored.
They keep bringing up up things that the Soviet Union did to Ukraine, to build the narrative that Russia will do the same, even though Russia has not done the same, but it's an age old tactic to tie the two as being the same in every aspect, even though Stalin was from Georgia, not Russia, and it was he that crated the Soviet Union.
Russia has been treated differently than we have treated defeated enemies, following hostilities.
Russia was an ally in WWII, while an ally we had in WWII, China, was abandoned to fall into communist control.
Apparently, these people have no clue when it comes to reality. Reality is that China is in the process of taking South Korea via the ballot box with the theft of the election, after leveling lawfare against the sitting president there.
What happened in Ukraine pails in comparison of what is transpiring in South Korea, but they are oblivious that China is in the process of seizing the entire Korean Peninsula, with their sights set on far more that is within what they consider as originally parts of China under the One China Policy that democrats have basically agreed to recognize. Those nations include Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, Cambodia the Philippines ad others I probably fail to mention, because China actually seeks world domination. They are in competition with the elites who think they should be the one who rule the world.
Russia actually sought to become closely aligned with the west, because China has always been a major concern for Russia, but the Soviet Union embraced them because they were much stronger than Russia is by itself.
