How we pushed the Columbia, the Northwest’s great river, to its limits
Seattle Times ^ | 5/25/2025 | Lynda V. Mapes

...We’ve hammered the habitat. Overfished the salmon. Mismanaged hatcheries. And most of all, harnessed the immense power of this river, turning its cold, fast waters to miles of warm, slackwater reservoirs...The Columbia is not just one story. But there are trends, and with around 150 hydroelectric dams, the basin today in many places is hostile to native species.

People since the settlers’ arrival extensively dammed the Columbia and its tributaries, including its largest, the Snake, and exploited its fisheries, promising we could have it all. Abundant salmon and cheap hydropower, slackwater navigation from the Pacific Ocean all the way to Lewiston, Idaho, and irrigation for some of the region’s largest farms..

There was a time within my memory when we bragged about being able to build something like the Grand Coulee Dam. The Seattle Times seems to be ashamed of it.

Uh,
1. Seattle - corrupt, leftist failing city.
2. Seattle Times - even more corrupt, failing “news” paper.
3. 1 and 2 above - an unbroken record of ruining everything they touch.
4. An unmatched ignorance of science, history, and honesty. Even their airplanes are no longer worth a shi...er..an Obama.
So...why give a **** about anything they say?

The river will be a great source for cooling water for a nuke plant.

The fact is that in all such big changes in the natural environment, natural or man made, LIFE WRIT LARGE does not give up, does not quit changing, adapting and changing some more. “Keeping it the same” is not the same as keeping it alive. Alive, changed but very much alive, it will be; in that some things in life will be less present and other things in life will take their place. It is really more about change than “loss”.

People since the settlers’ arrival extensively dammed the Columbia and its tributaries, including its largest, the Snake, have quit losing life, limb and property from devastating floods every freaking year.

Start using nuclear power to supply electricity across this nation and remove the dams to give the fish a fighting chance. Farms and cities can pump directly from the rivers.

Let’s see...choose one...

1. “hostile to native species”
2. Very friendly to the homo sapiens species. Makes modern life enjoyable and affordable.

“So...why give a **** about anything they say?”

Because they and their ilk influence the state houses, especially in Washington state. Together, the papers and state governments work to destroy everything we’ve built the past 150 years.

When did “lakes” become an environmental catastrophe? It’s hard to keep track of what is helpful or harmful. Starvation used to be bad, but if it saves a few Coho Salmon, it is good. Sulphur dioxide from power plants was making the earth colder, so they scrubbed it out of power plant emissions. Then it got warmer and so we have to use renewable energy. Hydro-power is renewable energy, but it changes the types of fish which live in Washington. So eliminating people is the only option the left is happy with. I humbly suggest the leftists should save the environment by using the new assisted suicide option in Washington and leave the rest of us alone.

“Overfished the salmon. “

Could that be the ‘indigenous peoples’?
