Nawrocki is an historian. His scholarship includes, among other things, the oppression of Poland during the time of Soviet occupation. He is wanted on criminal charges by Russia (for toppling monuments to communism). He will hold a largely ceremonial office, succeeding a fellow member of Poland's moderately Eurosceptic Law and Justice Party.

The outcome suggests that Poland can be expected to take a more populist and nationalist path under its new leader, who was backed by U.S. President Donald Trump.

Great news...

The President of Poland is the head of state, while the Prime Minister is the Chief Executive. In contrast, the President of the United States is both.

A real nail biter: 50.89% of the vote. The smear campaign against him was disgusting and may have backfired.

He still has to survive the election certification process.

It's a good indication of Poland's electorate. They are more conservative than Tusk, except on one issue: Women love their abortions, even in conservative Poland. Hopefully PiS can regain control of the government in the next parliamentary election, even if it means avoiding the abortion issue. Europe needs a few more countries pushing back against central control from Brussels.

It looks like Nawrocki and outgoing President Duda are more alike than different. In fact, Duda endorsed Nawrocki, saying it was like a "third term" for him. Both are anti-EU, anti-immigration, anti-Russia, pro-NATO, pro-Trump. Nawrocki seems more socially conservative. While Duda supported Ukraine joining NATO, Nawrocki opposes it.

Correct. However, a few years ago, Poland had identical twin brothers as President and Prime Minister (Lech and Jarosław Kaczyński); so, they came close to combining the offices of head of state and head of government. The twins were the founders of the political party of the country’s newly elected President; and, like him, were active in the Polish resistance to the Soviet occupation.

Poland had an abortion law similar to the rest of Europe, and then the Supreme Court outlawed abortions dealing with disability or sex or any other matter protected against discrimination by the Polish constitution.

Following this ruling, abortion is allowed only (1) to protect the mother (as certified by a physician) and (2) when the pregnancy resulted from rape or incest (as certified by the district attorney).

The ruling coalition proposed to adopt a German-style law where abortion was allowed during the first three months (no questions asked) and after that only to protect the mother.

The coalition fell short by just a few votes, 218 to 215. The rape and incest exception proved crucial in defeating the bill.

Also in the Polish law, there is no penalty for the woman, only for the abortionist. I think this provision was also crucial to defeating the bill.

There are lessons from Poland for our more conservative states.

The first priority will be for Poland to join with Hungary and Slovakia to block any attempts by the Yurps to punish Hungary for banning the sexual deviants’ parade or for refusing to hand their country over to invading feral muslims or for not going along with any of the rest of the Yurps’ hobby horses.

I must take exception to that “largely a ceremonial office”.

That isn’t quite correct in the Polish case which is semi Presidential where executive power is split between Prime Minister and Presid7, with the Prime Minister having much more, but the Polish PM is far weaker than the British or Indian or even German PM.

The Polish President can veto a lot and direct policy.

What this means is that when you have two opposing parties in PM and Presidential offices, there is deadlock.

And it looks like Nawrocki will have more backbone than Duda, I hope.

So Tusk will not be able to implement his leftist agenda. I hope this ends Trzaskowski career, after two failed Presidential attempts, but I think he is shameless and won’t leave

Von der Leyen already congratulates Nawrocki.

It loks like they tried everything to fix the vote and still failed, so perhaps Nawrocki for really 55% or even 60%

The smear campaign was something I thought only an idiot would believe

1. That he was a pimp, but no proof, no witnesses?!? Not even one?

2. That he was vetter by the security forces under Tusk, and they didn’t say anything about this.

But yest I know an intelligent, conservative 70 year old lady who believed this enough to want to vote Trzaskowski. Thank goodness my wife convinced her to at least not vote. But it is insane how people could believe thus

It isn’t that simple. PiS is also corrupt (as is PO). A lot of people are disgusted with both these main parties.

I voted konfederacja for the parliamentary and Mentzen for the first round. But Konfederacja is a coalition of a lot of groups. I like Mentzen Korwin Mikke party but there is also Grzegorz Braun party and I consider him an antisemitic nutjob.

If we can implode Trzecia Droga and Hołownia and move the voters to Konfederacja, that would be a big win
