Republican lawmakers are breathing a sigh of relief that the courts are putting the brakes on President Trump’s trade war, which has pummeled markets, created economic uncertainty and taken a bite out of Trump’s approval ratings.
It’s unclear who will win the final legal battle, which could end up in the Supreme Court.
But Republicans for now are mostly hoping Trump takes a political win in the form of judicial decisions that could hold back his trade war or even put the tariffs on ice.
“I’m sure that Republican senators are secretly rooting for the Supreme Court to uphold the lower-court decision,” said Brian Darling, a GOP strategist and former Senate aide.
He said GOP lawmakers are “quietly applauding the decision” by two courts Wednesday and Thursday to halt Trump’s tariffs “because it saves them from having to deal with the tariff issue, which has proven to be unpopular.”
One Republican who has been vocal in his criticism of the Trump tariffs is Sen. Rand Paul (Ky.).
He applauded the court’s ruling, arguing that the Constitution gives Congress, not the president, exclusive authority to tax imports.
“I have said time and time again that the Founders wanted to prevent one person from having unilateral control and decision-making powers. That’s why the power of the purse and the ability to tax lie with Congress, not the president,” Paul posted on social platform X.

Congress abdicated its duties and responsibilities decades ago. Regulatory agencies, like the EPA, are operating without Congressional oversight, churning out regulations that are not designed to benefit America, but rather to be a full employment act for the EPA. Why? Because your stature in DC is a direct function of the number of people under your control and it costs agencies directors nothing to ask for more employees. There is no incentive in DC to be efficient. Do we really need 16,000+ EPA workers? Hint: No.
The long train of abuses and usurpations always seems to be the fault of anybody but Congress in the eyes of the Swamp Scum Congress..

It’s the Hill. When they say GOP, they mean GOPe.
>> I have never seen Rand Paul or his goofy old man actually accomplish anything
Hey now! Both exhibit excellent turd-in-the-punchbowl skillz.
I used to admire Paul for not accepting campaign cash from AIPAC. It’s not so impressive when you realize he must be getting his backing from the same interests who’ve been selling out the American middle class for fifty years. As a Kentuckian watching what’s left of the Kentucky middle class struggle and continue to decline, I find Paul’s recents PR stunts for the globalists unconscionable.
I guess their business donors were threatening to withhold campaign funds if they didn’t stop the hit to their profits.
BRAVO!!! Congress had plenty of time to create this gigantic leach that is our federal government, then they empower a bunch of damn bureaucrats, who are accountable to no one to control and run the whole mess. If they want their “constitutional powers” back, they should do their Constitutional responsibilities. The Constitution never intended that all the power of the people be handed over to hundreds of agencies the we did not vote for.
True, but our Founders did not foresee a Congress that spends the majority of its time working to get re-elected rather than do what's right for the country. Sadly, the US needs to be making long run decisions today to put it back on track, but the politicians' long run is defined as their term of office. Tariffs are a long run policy designed to revitalize American manufacturing and Congress could give a crap because the benefits are past their term of office.
Yes, Rand has been somewhat an overall disappointment to me. I don’t understand why he lived next door to such a violent neighbor. Those injuries were severe.
Mr. Bolton is a day late and a dollar short.
How old is THAT little gem.
He should read the news.
Yesterday, on the TV show, “Inside Edition,” they had a short piece of video clips of women upset & shocked about tariffs on clothes (one I remember was from China of course).
Yes we all take our cues from The Hill. 😆
Maybe so. But where is the 34 billion in revenue that we gained from this? I don’t want 5 thousand dollar checks going out as trump promised. I’d rather it go to the debt. I don’t care if it’s only a few hours of interest. That’s where it belongs. His promise of 5 grand will just heat up the inflation.
The uniparty can’t be killed.
I think we need to start a new national party that operates first as an organization to find and support true conservatives to run within the GOP—and then upon gaining strength to go it alone.

The power of the purse! LMAO! When has the GOP EVER said no to spending?
Hurtling towards 40 TRILLION DOLLARS in short term debt, not counting the long-term entitlement obligations, for another 150 TRILLION DOLLARS owed to the PEOPLE.
Harumph! Harumph! Harumph!
The GOP are the best Democrat allies money can buy!
Loves me some New Green Deal, Build Back Better GOVERNMENT!

So, Republicans have no problem when the rest of the world puts tariffs on USA goods?
But, when Trump puts tariffs on foreign goods, that is so radical, and so confusing, and so arbitrary, we cannot allow it?
Rand Paul: "I have said time and time again that the Founders wanted to prevent one person from having unilateral control and decision-making powers..."
And, yet, Rand Paul has no problem when one USA federal Judge can shut down the Executive and Legislative Branch of government for months or years?
And an appeals court put the trade court’s ruling on hold. So, the left and the RINOs are celebrating prematurely.
This morning’s economic news is that consumer sentiment is up, wages are up, and inflation is down. All indicators call for a Fed rate cut when they meet on June 17-18th.
