General Motors is investing $888 million in its Tonawanda Propulsion plant in Buffalo, New York, "to support the production of the sixth generation of GM’s V-8 engines," the automaker announced Tuesday.
The investment is a shift from a previously announced $300 million commitment to make electric-vehicle drive units at the plant, as the V-8 engines are used in GM's full-sized trucks and SUVs.
GM says the newer engines will provide drivers better fuel economy and reduce emissions by utilizing "new combustion and thermal management innovations."
"Our significant investments in GM’s Tonawanda Propulsion plant show our commitment to strengthening American manufacturing and supporting jobs in the U.S.," Mary Barra, GM Chair and CEO, said in a statement.
"GM's Buffalo plant has been in operation for 87 years and is continuing to innovate the engines we build there to make them more fuel efficient and higher performing, which will help us deliver world-class trucks and SUVs to our customers for years to come," she concluded.
While the plant prepares to start production of the sixth generation V-8 engine in 2027, it will continue to produce fifth generation V-8 engines.
The move is likely another sign of automakers adapting to slower-than-expected market demand for EVs and comes after the Detroit automaker aggressively lobbied Congress to rescind California electric-vehicle rules.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul said the project will support 870 jobs at Tonawanda Propulsion, including 177 jobs deemed at risk, according to Reuters. The state plans to provide up to $16.96 million in tax credits in return for investment commitments.

The original 330 (precuror to the 350) in my Olds 88 from the 60’s was the smoothest running engine of any of the hundred or so cars I have owned.
I was always a fan of Chryslers slant six 225.
“Uh, oh. Has Kathy given up on the global warming scam?”
Judge to deem this unconstitutional in 3,2,1...

Let’s Hope GM’s New V8 Is Better Than The Last One.
Currently, the 5.3-liter V8 produces 355 horsepower, and the 6.2-liter V8 makes 420 horsepower. Both engines have been plagued with issues—both the 5.3L and 6.2L engines equipped with Active Fuel Management (AFM) have experienced valve lifter failures, which can also cause the camshaft to fail, and the 6.2L is currently under massive recall due to crankshaft bearing failures.
Why?
“Bring back the 350”
I loved the LS1 engine when it came out and got to drive it with a 1998 Z28, which was awesome.

Auto repair mechanics’ dream! Bloody machines will be back-logged in the shops more than they are on the road...like RV’s.
Then turn it into a 383 with a mild cam
This is GM not government. NY government is still dedicated to an impossible net zero suicide cruise.
Another stone ax reliable engine.
Yes they were/are sweet engines! At one point in the early 60’s I had a 1950 88...2nd year of the Rocket! Wish I had it now.
...and the 283!
GM stands for Government Motors for very good reason.
And the reason that postponement of the EV sales penalty is a big deal is because Albany has likely already spent that money that now won’t be coming in.
GM gets a sweet gift.
So does NY’s Deep State.
Meanwhile taxpayers will have to make up the shortfall.
And fewer and fewer of us are sticking around to do that.
NYS is circling the bowl.
I know nothing about cars ... but does mean real cars are making a comeback? Maybe even reach the point where it’s possible to distinguish one car from another again?
That was a great motor!
“...tells you a lot when they’re producing from plants located in a high cost state like NY.”
It’s not a new thing for this area of NY. In the ‘50s and ‘60s, half (probably more) of the people in our town worked at GM and Ford in that area of Buffalo — Tonawanda, Lackawanna, etc. Maybe they’re able to use existing infrastructure to some degree.

Bitch should have been fired DECADES AGO for sucking up to the feds, rather than considering the needs of her customers. Basically made her brand the Bud Lite of automobiles.
I guess our in-house Green Peace dude isn’t going to show up to tell us the wonders of his Tesla. Personally, I cannot stand those types - they make a stupid decision and rather than admit it, they lie about it, I guess to assuage their guilt.
