A House GOP-backed proposal that would cut billions in federal dollars from the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), the nation’s largest food assistance program, is drawing concerns from Republicans in the upper chamber.
The proposal, included in House Republicans’ recently passed package to enact President Trump’s tax priorities and spending cuts, would require states to cover a share of SNAP benefits costs, which are currently completely funded by the federal government.
“That’s something that I heard some members voice concern about,” Senate Agriculture Committee Chair John Boozman (R-Ark.) said Thursday. “So, we’ll need to address that.”
While Boozman said Senate Republicans aren’t drawing a red line around the plan just yet, members “want to look specifically at how those particular policies will affect their individual states.”
“Some of that we know, some of it we don’t.”
The House bill calls for the federal share of the cost of SNAP to go from 100 percent in the next two fiscal years to 95 percent starting fiscal 2028.
It also includes language that would increase states’ shares of the costs in fiscal 2028 depending on their payment error rates. If the error rate is 6 percent or higher, states would be subject to a sliding scale that could see their share of allotments rise to a range of between 15 percent and 25 percent.

The bill - for various reasons -is not popular in the U.S. Senate if they have people like Boozman questioning it.
Should be a fascinating debate and vote
The blue states that allow illegals should pay a lot more.
What will all those starving poor Americans do? They are just skin and bones nowadays.
Senators are schizophrenic.
“We want more cuts”
“Why are you cutting?”
Food stamps are one of the biggest scams out there, I wish the whole program would be eliminated, it’s nothing but a vote buying scheme and is a HUGE source of fraud in my area (east central Mississippi). They hand out so much that the recipients can’t spend it all on food so they buy gas & beer with it. All they have to do to fool the system is find a small store that doesn’t have bar code scanners where they know the clerk. The clerk rings it up as food and swipe the EBT card, the going rate is 50 cents on the dollar if they’re buying gas or beer with it.
I saw something similar in Portland. They addicts buy bottled water by the case. Take it outside and dump all the water out, and return the bottles for the deposit.
That’s THEIR way of converting SNAP to cash.
BS!
John Boozman needs to stop being a greedy propagandist...
The states should be made to share at 20% next year and escalate it by 10% each year after...
This is just the deep state firing a warning shot across Trump’s bow...
Trump should just say “get stuffed”...
Red state taxpayers do not want to continue paying for blue state problems...
There is VERY BIG LOBBY supporting food stamps .. general mills, kellogs, etc love the SNAP program. There are big profits in junk food.
You just made me think of something. How about we make the SALT deductions conditional on states repealing sanctuary laws?
A friend of mine gets a whole $20 a month in snap benefits.
Boozeman ought to STFU.
The Boozer ought to recall that he is not actually the head of an agricultural chamber of commerce.
I ordered some Big Red Gum from Amazon. It said that it qualifies for SNAP EBT!?! WTF?!? We have to pay for their gum they probably spit out on the sidewalks.🤬🤬🤬
“general mills, kellogs, etc love the SNAP program. There are big profits in junk food.” That will come to a well-deserved end soon-now that RFK has shown everyone the chemical additives and their links to obesity and chronic illness. Taxpayers should not be funding any junk food/frankenfood stuff-and it is obvious from the size of most EBT card users that they are not starving-let’s have SNAP provide recipients of benefits with only real, fresh produce and meat-and a couple of very basic cookbooks...
If you force thee SNAP people to eat fresh produce, they might starve. Junk food is as addictive as nicotine.
Either that-or they might get a job so they can buy their drug of choice-junk food. In his report, RFK addressed the fact that the sweeteners and other additives are addictive-he said as addictive as heroin, and as a former heroin addict he knew about that.
I am a naturalist, raised eating fresh organic food on a family ranch. I pay a bit more for grass fed, free range meat and any organic, non GMO produce I don’t have in my garden-it is my choice to eat healthy and have a natural lifestyle. If someone wants unhealthy junk to eat, that is their choice-but the rest of us should not be paying for it...
Yep - and they omit that many SNAP recipients buy junk food, drive late model cars and have IPhones...
