Americans across the country are remembering George Floyd five years after he was killed by police, with special gatherings in the city where he grew up and the one where he died.
The murder of Floyd, a black man, in Minneapolis by police officer Derek Chauvin led to nationwide protests against racism and police brutality.
On Sunday, Floyd's family gathered in their hometown of Houston near Floyd's gravesite for an event led by the Rev. Al Sharpton, while Minneapolis held several commemorations.
What many hailed as a national "reckoning" with racism after Floyd's death, though, seems to be fading as President Donald Trump starts to roll back police reforms in Minneapolis and other cities.
In Minneapolis, community members planned a morning church service, a candlelight vigil and an evening gospel concert on Sunday to remember Floyd.
The events were a part of the annual Rise and Remember Festival taking place in George Floyd Square, the intersection where Floyd was murdered and which has since been named to honour him.
"Now is the time for the people to rise up and continue the good work we started," Angela Harrelson, Floyd's aunt and co-chair of the Rise and Remember nonprofit, said in a statement about the festival.
In Houston, where Floyd grew up and where he is buried, local organisations planned poetry sessions, musical performances and speeches by local pastors.
Floyd was murdered in 2020 during a police arrest in Minneapolis when Chauvin, a white police officer, stood on his neck for more than nine minutes.
The killing - captured on a bystander's phone camera - sparked global outrage and a wave of demonstrations against racial injustice and police use of force.
Chauvin has been serving a 22-year prison sentence after he was convicted of murdering the 46-year-old. Other officers were convicted...

George Floyd was a thug who died of a drug overdose.
Other cops knelt on shoulders. Derek Chauvin knelt on George Floyd’s neck. You can see it right there in the photo.
Thanks to Derek Chauvin, George Floyd is 5 years sober!
Some Computer Whiz would make a ton of cash, designing an online game, allowing the customer to take a virtual p**s on
George Floyd’s government purchased gravestone.
Figure out how to monetize that, and you’re set until you get cancelled. Use different spelling of names and places.
I do not give George Floyd a moment of my valuable time...He was a Hood rat and got what was coming to him.
Floyd was high on drugs with super human strength, what can y ou expect from the police when dealing with some one like that>
I will remember Ashley Babbit and how Democrats murdered her at the Capitol.
I remember being in a bookstore a few years back and seeing a book named “Remembering Slavery”. it’s impossible to remember slavery because all slaves and slaveholders are gone.
The purpose of the book, and of the George Floyd celebrations is to fan the flames of racial hatred and justify demands for more handouts.
When I read that there was a George Floyd square in Minneapolis where there would be a festival, I had a mental image of a crowd of thugs and other drug users walking among decorated booths, checking out and buying whatever drug(s) the dealers there were selling...
I also don’t remember that “Chauvin, a white police officer, stood on his neck for more than nine minutes.” That is a lie-and just as ridiculous and disgusting as the rest of the crap making a saint out of a drug user and dealer who was also a thief, and manhandled and threatened a pregnant woman. I wish someone would tear down, paint over, etc every sign, mural, etc that glorifies that criminal-that is a slap in the face to all US LEOs...
I tineyed it and found some matches, but no other information.
Fox News covered this story this afternoon, too. According to Fox, Floyd’s death triggered “protests”. No mention of looting, arson, vandalism, assault, battery or any other part of 2020’s progressive crime wave, just “protest”, seemingly peaceful from what was mentioned in the report.
Good Lord! The BBC is running this crap? We do not have a special holiday for drug addicts. We do not remember and have a memorial for this jerk who caused his own death and tore this country apart. But apparently the BBC can’t find enough crap in their own country on which to report. Losers and grifters and liars… All of them
“Americans across the country are remembering George Floyd five years after he was killed by police”. BBC, this American ain’t.
Who gives a fk? Criminals must be stamped out. The Left CANNOT be given grounds to riot and seize power.
Therefore it is irrelevant if Chauvin was right or wrong and if Floyd’s rights were violated. He was a two-bit petty thug and it’s irrelevant. His death means nothing. What’s important is that 1) the left be violently destroyed and 2) crime is stamped out even if criminal’s rights are violated.
We are under no obligation to respect the enemy’s rights. The left and the criminals must be handled by any means necessary. Let us adopt their slogans and methods.
Freedom and rights are for the Right only, not the leftists. They do not believe in individual rights and freedoms in the first place and THEREFORE CANNOT HAVE ANY.
So 5 years of sobriety for George. The same man who held a gun to a pregnant woman’s stomach. What a man.🙄🤮
This is America. Obviously, we do not advocate a cop being the judge, jury, and executioner.
