Zaluzhny: No Miracle Will Restore 1991 Borders – Ukraine Must Fight Smart or Not at All

Ukraine’s former top general warns against false hopes of restoring 1991 borders and says only tech-driven warfare can overcome Russia’s war resources.

Ukraine’s Ambassador to the UK and former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces (AFU), retired Gen. Valery Zaluzhny, has cautioned against hoping for a return to Ukraine’s 1991 borders, warning that Russia still possesses the resources to continue the war.

Speaking at the “Export of Security: Ukrainian Weapons in the World” forum, Zaluzhny said, as quoted by Ukrainian media:

“I hope that there are no people in this hall who still hope for some miracle or wonder, for some white swan that will bring peace to Ukraine, the borders of 1991 or 2022, and after that, there will be great happiness.”

He also says that Russua has surpassed Ukrainian drone advantages, at a time Ukraine us relying on drones to defend entire sectors of the front because no troops are available anymore to man trenches.

Ukraine no longer has combat reserves. They went from a 6-1 troop advantage to a 3-1 disadvantage.

Russia has reduced a 1.2m army to 300k combat troops and less than 600k available in all roles. Ukraine sat in defensive positions and was picked apart for 3 years. No maneuver warfare... just sitting and waiting until Russia developed FABs, then drones, and missiles.

Now the Uke general staff is worried even equipment shortages are weeks away.

Russia is only now advancing on Ukraine, true to their stated tactics of destroying the AFU.

Oh please. What a disgraceful description of that description! You should be thoroughly ashamed of yourself.

The Ukraine has not just ‘sat in defensive positions’ all this time.

There were counterattacks in the North and South that regained vast swaths of land.

The purpose of the initial Russian attack (that failed badly, but only by the narrowest of margins) was to conquer the entire Ukraine.

So what is the best action from the West collectively. As we await a peace deal that may or may not be forthcoming? Let us assume that it is not. Worst case Ontario.
Will the West throw all in to damage Russia and make continuing unbearable (to them)?
Or give in, stop and let the Europeans also stop a few moments later and Ukraine is no more?

What nonsense.

Ukraine hasn't won a single battle in entire war. The only ground it "gained" back were areas which Russia retreated from.

And, there is absolutely no chance of Ukraine getting back territory that has been annexed into Russia, areas that are well-fortified.

The last counteroffensive by Ukraine in 2023 was a total failure.

That is another lie.

The Russian territorial objective was to 1) build a land bridge from mainland Russia to its naval base in Crimea and 2) liberate Donetsk and Lugansk.

It completed the land bridge to Crimea inside of ten months.

My nice new neighbors from Ukraine are unusually quiet, have been for a few days. I know they have a daughter with children living in the Southern part of the country, which was, about 18 months ago, safe for them to visit.

Probably not.

“Ukraine’s Zaluzhny says Ukraine will never return to 1991 Borders.”

Obviously, but I doubt Zaluzhny will return to whatever borders Ukraine ends up with, if any, due to this outburst.

He said that Russia’s capacity to wage the war in Ukraine primarily depends on its available resources. Since late 2023, he said, the Kremlin has shifted to a war of attrition.

According to Zaluzhny, victory is only possible through the complete dismantling of Russia’s ability to fight.

“I mean the destruction of its military-economic potential. In our modern conditions, there is a huge shortage of human resources and the catastrophic economic situation in which we find ourselves.”

Earlier comments by Zaluzhny
Zaluzhny has been outspoken about his views on global affairs and the changing nature of warfare.

In late April, he spoke candidly about how Russia’s full-scale invasion has reshaped both modern warfare and the global order.

At the Ukraine-UK Defense Technology Forum in London on April 25, Zaluzhny said the war had fundamentally altered combat as we know it, particularly due to drones:

“The war in Ukraine has become the driving force behind many forces that have led to a change in the world order. This change has already taken place. And it does not depend on whether modern politicians want to see it or not.”

He recalled a turning point in the summer of 2023:
“One morning… when Ukrainian troops were overcoming enemy defense lines meter by meter, drones appeared in the sky on a scale that led to the transformation of the entire architecture of the battle.”

Zaluzhny said the widespread use of reconnaissance and strike UAVs has made the battlefield “absolutely transparent.”

“Thanks to unmanned systems and digital technologies, the traditional and familiar types of weapons that have determined the nature of war for decades have become history. They are no longer there.”

Drones and electronic warfare have rendered GPS-guided weapons unreliable, and tanks increasingly useless:

“Armored vehicles … have become defenseless against cheap drones, and therefore their use in other types of combat is impossible today.”

“The emergence of a large number of small and cheap drones has made it economically impractical to use extremely expensive missiles for air defense systems.”

Drawing a comparison to World War I, Zaluzhny warned that the war has reached a virtual standstill – strategically and physically - because traditional tactics are no longer viable and large-scale assaults are “nearly suicidal.”

In a separate address at Chatham House on March 6, Zaluzhny criticized US policy, saying it risks destabilizing the global balance: “The US is destroying the world order.”

He warned that ongoing US-Russia negotiations might empower the Kremlin and weaken European security. Still, he praised Ukraine’s position in the global arena:

“Ukraine is not only defending NATO’s eastern flank, but also securing Europe’s future security.”

“In the next 5 to 10 years, Europe’s security architecture would be impossible without Ukraine.”

He said there is a need for a high-tech war of survival - one that maximizes impact while minimizing manpower and economic costs.

“Ukraine is not capable of another war in terms of demography and economy and should not even think about it,” he added.

We’ll see, Zaluzhny has taken up Homo Dancing and Penis Piano Playing, if that means anything.

Yeah, right! The Russians were not driven back from Kyiv, they just withdrew as a good will gesture. The Russians were not driven out of Kherson, they just withdrew as a good will gesture. The Russian were not driven out of Izium and Lyman, they just withdrew as a goodwill gesture. Do you not know how your over-the-top claims make you look ridiculous? Every nation has had its shares of wins and losses in war. The Russians are not supermen. They have won much but they have also lost some. Why do you find that so hard to admit?

So what is the best action from the West collectively.

I'm not interested in the Collective, that would be Marx.

I'm interested in the best action for the Constitutional Representative Republic of The United States Of America As Founded, The Founders Intentions, and the Legacy American Citizenry.

I have little interest and America has little need for Foreign Entanglements.

The Russians, you idiot, were never going to try to take Kiev with 40,000.

It was diversion while the Russians setup their offensive Donbass.
