Summary
WASHINGTON, May 22 (Reuters) - U.S. Senate Republicans said on Thursday they will seek substantial changes to President Donald Trump's sweeping tax and spending bill after it narrowly won approval in the House of Representatives, in a sign that significant hurdles remain for the package.
Just hours after House Republicans passed it with only one vote to spare, senators from Trump's party outlined a range of objections to the package, which encompasses many of his top domestic priorities. That could make it more difficult for Congress to settle on a final version for Trump to sign into law.
"I expect there will be considerable changes in the Senate," said Republican Senator Ted Cruz of Texas.
Republicans broadly agree on the main planks of the legislation, which would extend Trump's 2017 tax cuts, tighten eligibility for health and food benefits, review many green-energy incentives and fund Trump's immigration crackdown.
But many of the same fractures that threatened the bill's passage in the House are at play in the Senate. Some lawmakers raised concerns about cuts to the Medicaid health care program, noting that the coalition of voters who powered Trump's November election victory and whose support they will need to hold control of Congress in the 2026 midterm elections rely on the bill.
Others repeated the concerns of House counterparts that the measure does not sufficiently cut spending. The nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office estimates it will add $3.8 trillion to the federal government's $36.2 trillion in debt.
Republicans control the Senate by a 53-47 margin, and they have invoked special rules that...

Thank you very much and God bless you.
I’m not a Hawley fan. He’s iffy.
Medicaid cuts? Are they so stupid they believe the lying press and Dems?
Yes.
Time for the senate attention whores to fire up...Rand Paul in 3..2..1
He came from out of nowhere. That always means there is a puppetmaster hiding out somewhere nearby.
RINOs are going to queer the bill.
Any chance of adding the language to remove short-barreled rifles and shotguns from the NFA?
The House has already included language to remove suppressors.
Not Cuts - Protections.
for those who honestly, financially, and physically need help. Too much taxdollars (apparently) end up going to lifestyle seekers taking advantage of the system.
If they cut more spending that needs cutting, that will be a good thing. More tax breaks for kids, beyond what the House has already increased, isn’t really needed in our financial situation.
Seriously, having children now is very well rewarded in recent tax bills..between the paid time off for the mother AND the father for some insane reason and all the tax credits, new parents are doing well.
Is anybody going to address runaway spending? This bill does nothing to address it. Trimming the edges do not count.
Back in the days of Regular Order, the Senate would always review something passed by the House of Representatives, alter, create/pass their own legislation. Then the regular Conference Committee would work on melding the two bills into something acceptable to both Chambers of the Federal Legislature. Both Chambers would vote Yea or Nay. If both Chambers voted Yea, the President can sign or veto. If one of the Chambers still votes Nay, it goes back to the Conference Committee.
Whatever happens to the current legislation, we hope eventually that the House of Representatives will start creating individual bills for each major section: Defense, Housing, Etc. The same process above could be used.
It may be a dream, but it is not impossible.
PS - Apologies to any young Skulls Full of Mush who never learned about this glorious system. I recommend the Rush Revere Time Travel Adventures With Exceptional Americans series.
The republican branch of The Uniparty want to break up the new Trump coalition by cutting entitlements to citizens when simply cutting entitlements to illegals would represent the largest cuts in history. They want to go after black and brown voters and drive them back onto the democrat plantation.
The thing is, not every cut has to get done in this bill. It’s not like Congress is going to lose the power to legislate after this bill passes. They have recission bills that can be passed. They can start a 2nd reconciliation bill once this one passes, if they want to.
The priority should be to get Trump’s major tax and spending promises passed, because the economy and the 2026 mid-terms depend on doing so. That’s the big story and yet posturing clowns like Ron Johnson have decided this is the time to hold out unless he gets everything he wants and to jeopardize all the good and necessary provisions in the bill, in the process.

I think you’re on to something there.
More than 50 years too late for me.
I thought at the Senators went to El Salvador to select an MS-13 landscaper and “pool boy.”
House members had their chance to add their pork in.
Now, Senate will add their pork in.
It is my profound hope that the Senate screws up the bill and that Trump moves to form a new political party that will meet in Florida in July. Republicans are not worthy of the name. It is decidedly time for a change.
no, I bet they strip any 2A positive parts out
Senators love to leave “skid” marks on every piece of legislation.
