Congressman Gerry Connolly died at the age of 75 on Wednesday morning.
The Virginia Democrat 'passed away peacefully at his home,' according to a statement from his family.
'His absence will leave a hole in our hearts, but we are proud that his life's work will endure for future generations,' they wrote.
Rep. Connolly announced he was diagnosed with esophageal cancer just days after the 2024 election in November.
'The sun is setting on my time in public service, and this will be my last term in Congress,' he said in a statement in April when revealing his cancer had returned.
Connolly served as a member of the House representing Virginia's 11th congressional district since 2009.
Since the start of the current Congress in January, Connolly served as Democratic ranking member of the highly influential House Oversight Committee.
But in April he announced he was stepping down from that role.
'With no rancor and a full heart, I move into this final chapter full of pride of what in what we accomplished together over 30 years,' he wrote in a letter to constituents and colleagues.
This story is breaking and will be updated.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
I don’t know what the laws in Virginia are but lets hope Youngkin does what the democrats in NY attempted to do and leave the seat vacant until 2026
Turbo Cancer?
I would wish cancer on no one.
Says it all - power above all, position before compassion, DIE FOR THE PARTY.
RIP!!!
True. Like all of us at the end of our pilgrimage here, he’s in God’s hands now.
Exactly. Cancer is horrible. I don’t wish it on anyone.
Horrible. Should he have been on maintenance chemo treatments?
Connolly was among the most vicious Communists of them all. 🦖
I wish cancer on my enemies. There, I said it.
He ‘discovered’ it the day of the election.
That’s how one district in Upstate NY was denied a voylte in the House on Obamacare.
Then Gov. Paterson refused to call for a prompt special election.
You know who else did that?
Mike Pence, when he was governor of Indiana.
Better person thanI
No comment.
Another good Democrat !
One less Dem.
I also wish cancer on no one. Sympathies to his family and friends - they are human beings like us who suffer loss, even if they’re a bit deluded on most issues.
What I don’t understand is how or why the man thought that another few months of working (after 30 years on the job) was more important than spending time with his family.
As someone with erosive esophagitis for many years, this is always chilling. He announced it last November and is already gone. It really moves fast. RIP.
