Federal officials are investigating why two planes got dangerously close on a runway at New York’s LaGuardia Airport earlier this month despite the airport being equipped with an advanced surface radar system that’s designed to help prevent such close calls.
Both the Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board said Monday that they are investigating the May 6 incident when a Republic Airways jet had to abort takeoff because a United Airlines plane was still taxiing across the runway.
In audio from the tower that ABC obtained from the website www.LiveATC.net, the air traffic control said to the pilot of the Republic Airways jet: “Sorry, I thought United had cleared well before that.”
At the time that controller was directing the Republic Airways jet to takeoff, a ground controller on a different radio frequency was directing the United plane to a new taxiway after it missed the first one it was supposed to use to exit the runway.
United Airlines didn’t immediately respond to questions about the incident while Republic Airways and the airport referred questions to the FAA.

Thank you very much and God bless you.
This almost crash is the result of Dr. Evil Elon Musk's DOGE team cancelling the air traffic control's DEI consultant's taxpayer funded trip to the Bahamas to study gay parrots' flying patterns.
Its only a matter of time before two jets full of passengers collide. As Sean Duffy said, its years of neglect of the system that will take at least a couple years to fix.
In the eighties, I owned a Beechcraft Baron, a twin engine, 6 seat airplane. I never permitted myself to get a license because I wanted an experienced pilot in the pilots seat not a full time real estate developer (me). Alan had over 20,000 hours but I clearly remember he would haul ass across a main runway even though he was clear on the radio and his eyes and mine saw nothing. Isn’t United the biggest practitioner of DEI in the industry?
It’s already happened. Look up “Tenerife disaster” for an account of the 1977 crash that killed 583 people.
One of those guys that were given the answers to the tests...
And I believe there was another “outage” at Newark AP today.
I’m starting to get a bit suspicious.
And the day ain’t over yet.
This stuff was probably happening regularly for the last 4 years. MSM just didn’t highlight it
No its President Trump’s fault. EVERYTHING is President Trump’s fault...literally EVERYTHING.
Barrons are nice
..........yes sir! Never had a significant problem with it in 6 years. A wingtip light went out. That was all as best I can remember.
There was a collision on the runway that the pilot avoided?
I used to fly a lot, went everywhere from Greece to Fiji, lots of nice vacations. Haven’t flown in years.
But my daughter flies all over the world now with a cousin.. Every time the ladies take off, I’m a basket case until they get back home. They were flying back from Australia the night the door blew off a Boeing plane.
(BTW, your screen name rocks.)
“Republic Airways”
Weren’t they merged decades ago?
Two planes - in dense fog.
There is going to be a major accident again. Its going to hapoen. Brace for it.
One is probably safer in a large commerical plane flying into US airports where the runways are parallel instead of criss crossing. Atlanta has 5 east-west runways, DFW has 5 north south that they mainly use, but a couple NW-SE for smaller planes. O’Hare is mostly parallel, with a couple of crossing runways like Dallas. LAX they are all parallel.
All three major New York airports need to be re-designed or replaced. And I don’t know what they were thinking in Denver when they used a swastika to design the runways.
