President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin held a 2-hour call on Monday in what the U.S. said was a push to get Russia to end its deadly war in Ukraine.
Both Trump and Putin described the call in a positive light, with the Kremlin chief saying it was "frank" and "useful," but it is not immediately clear what results were achieved.
Trump took to social media to praise the call as having gone "very well" and said, "Russia and Ukraine will immediately start negotiations toward a Ceasefire and, more importantly, an END to the War."
"The conditions for that will be negotiated between the two parties, as it can only be, because they know details of a negotiation that nobody else would be aware of," he added.
Putin, in a statement after the call, also noted that "a ceasefire with Ukraine is possible" but noted "Russia and Ukraine must find compromises that suit both sides."
Any concrete details on the nature of these compromises remain unclear, despite negotiation attempts in Turkey on Friday, which Trump suggested failed because he needed to negotiate with Putin first.

It’s almost like the lesser of two, very bad evils. I don’t like either one of those guys, but to me, Zelensky seems to be the one with his head in the sand...and wants the rest of Europe to go down with him.
A 2 hour phone call?
I don’t trust Putin or Zelensky. Not one bit.
Trump is creating a record.
So that when he says I did everything I could but neither side wanted peace, he has receipts to back him up.
Maybe the back and forth translations alone took nearly one hour. Putin speaks a lot of English, but like many other heads of state, he will leave the proper interpretation up to an expert.
Hopefully, his translator will fare better than what Giorgia Meloni, Prime Minister of Italy had to deal with as she met with Trump. Meloni’s interpreter was so slow and clumsy with translating what the Prime Minister wanted to say to President Trump, that Meloni had to take over the duties herself.
Most think the translator, simply had an attack of bad nerves at such a high profile meeting. About a month ago.
You have to start somewhere. If anyone can do it Trump can.

Thank you. Interesting perspective.
Do you know if any progress has been made toward Iran?
Especially when it's relatively easy to translate back and forth in English.
I trust Trump.
But he’s dealing with a couple of cooks to whom the truth and honor don’t mean anything.
The list of European leaders who spent 1 to 4 years in England or the US is longer than the list that didn’t.
Is it easy? I’ve never done it. I know some basic Spanish, enough to get to the Tienda, count my Dinero and go straight back to mi Casa, but any 3 yr old from that culture, knows more Spanish than I do. If I had to speak in front of two of the most famous people alive today, I too might get a sudden case of dry mouth.
Probably so. Some of the better European universities are in Britain and France.
Zelensky, MBS, Meloni, Macron and Bibi can all speak English.

Good point and I think you’re right - he’ll be able to say that NEITHER side is willing to do what’s necessary to end the war, so it will no longer be his problem...and so he’ll get on to business with Russia. Europe can have Ukraine.
Start negotiations? With due respect to Trump’s team, this is going in circles. I’m not saying its his fault, but the administration needs to stop suggesting that progress is being made until concrete steps are shown to have been taken.
Trump is going to have to sit down with Putin and hear what he is going to tell him. Trump is not getting a clear picture of what is actually happening on any aspect of Ukraine.
Trump is getting second hand information that comes with the spin apporpriate to the agenda of the messenger. If it is Rubio it comes with his anti-Russian historical slant, but no real true information on Ukraine.
If that information is coming from the EUroweenies, they have to worry about their SOCIALISM, ECONOMIES, and KEEPING THE USA IN EUROPE so we can continue to pour money into their economies. Additionally, those like Macron, Starmer, Mertz or Zeninsli want American Boots on ground, but first they want sanctions.
Trump and the west have missed the main topic of Russian dialouge.
The Russians are NO LONGER INTERESTED IN DOING BUSINESS WITH THE WEST, especially Europe. Russia’s economy has moved beyond the ability of EU sanctions or US sanctions on productions form the EU or US going to Russia. Brics nations will not enforce any American/EU sanctions.
The Russians are going to actually remove the kid’s gloves and prosecute meaningful combat operations against Ukraine, without any constraints that Trump’s engagement has yielded; The Russians are just about done with Trump because he ignored everything he has been told.
Ukriane is going to now suffer from China supplying drones, artillery and cruise missiles to Russia on a scale previously not considered. China is telling Russia they can produce 5,000 cruise missiles a week. The EU is very much responsible for poor relations with China bleeding into the Ukraine conflict; they control Zelinski who has ruined Ukrainian relations with China.
We American’s need to wake up fast. Our military is no longer unmatched. While we have been busy with corrupt idiots like the Biden Admin rejecting Russian abilities we have witnessed Russia missile and electronic warfare capabilites overcome and surpass what we currently produce on the battlefield.
Russia is going hammer Ukraine and Trump can do nothing conventionally to stop it. For Russia lines have been crossed and NATO has the War Criminals. Russia may actually hammer the Romanian NATO base under construction, and take out all the war reserve stocks in Poland as a tit for tat for France, Britian and Biden firing missiles into Russia.
And again . . . only one thing came from this phone call.
The sentence about conditions being negotiated between the parties because they know details no one else does . . . understand what just happened.
Ukraine and Europe has been pounding their talking point in unison and the magic words have been Unconditional Ceasefire.
Trump just destroyed that. He explicitly says conditions will be negotiated. He doesn’t give a damn about the Euro talking points.
That’s about 3 weeks of talk about unconditional ceasefire tossed into the trash can.
Trump is just trying to salvage whatever land assets he can to save the western central bankers. They are overextended in Ukraine. Trump cannot be both for peace and against war at the same time he is responsible for the period of Ukraine’s largest buildup militarily, e.g., 2016-2019 when Ukriane’s armed forces increased 60-80% - this is not lost on the Russians. They have watched Trump try to distance himself from Biden and the NATO-Cons, but Trump himself is very much beholden to them. Trump either walks away or he continues to be the largest party to the war.
NATO lost this war. I can’t imagine Russia doing any more than they have already done, which is to talk with Trump while Trump’s major allied partners are ramping up their war with Russia. Trump owns Zelinski and has veto power over NATO. He is the free world’s commander in chief and as such he is not really qualified to be a peace maker in this situation. Russia has been kind not tell him that to his face, but that day is coming when Trump goes to Moscow.
