Trump's 'big, beautiful bill' passes key House hurdle after GOP rebel mutiny

Republicans aim to deliver bill to president's desk by Fourth of July using budget reconciliation process

President Donald Trump’s "one big, beautiful bill" survived a key hurdle in the House of Representatives on Sunday night, putting it one step closer to a chamber-wide vote later this week.

It comes after a rebellion by four House conservatives upended plans to advance the bill on Friday morning.

Lawmakers on the House Budget Committee were summoned back to Washington for a 10 p.m. meeting to vote again on the bill. It passed the panel in a nearly party-line vote, 17 to 16, with four Republicans voting "present."

Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., made a surprise appearance in the committee room shortly before the vote began, telling reporters there would likely be "minor modifications" to the final bill before disappearing into a back room with the four GOP holdouts who sunk the bill on Friday morning.

Evidently SALT cap raise 150% to $30,000/couple filing jointly.

That became largely irrelevant to me five years ago when most of our income (PA) became non-taxable.

I might end up filing Schedule A next year once again...

Could you be more specific?

Was the State and Local Tax deduction (SALT) already set to be raised (to benefit high tax-paying individuals in blue states) to $30,000 for married couples, but now, after the initially failed committee vote, the bill has been amended such that the SALT deduction will no longer be raised?

Or, was there initially no plan to raise the SALT deduction, but, after the initially failed committee vote, the bill has been amended such that the SALT deduction for married couples will now be raised to $30,000?

Let everybody get mad at Chip Roy while the GOP Establishment gets what it wants.

Remember every last headline and first paragraph for the last 20 years. It’s always the conservatives losing.

Note that. It’s always the conservatives losing. It gets real old seeing the GOP win over us.

Well, ‘conservatives’ merely conserve the status quo *shrug*

Plus, the base KEEP (re-)electing those that stab ‘em in the back, proving the “problem” isn’t D.C. but the base.

(L) keep getting to say, “Told ya so” every 2 yrs. Shame nobody else heeds those warnings
