Schumer bizarrely claims DOGE may have been partly to blame for Mexican ship’s deadly Brooklyn Bridge mishap

He missed the boat on this one.

Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-NY) on Sunday bizarrely suggested that DOGE cuts to the US Coast Guard could have been partly to blame for a Mexican tall ship’s deadly collision with the Brooklyn Bridge.

“We know there has been meddling by the Trump administration into USCG staffing, and we need to know how this might have impacted the events of last night — from a command, communication and local coordination level,” the embattled Dem said in a press release.

“There are indications that this service [Vehicle Traffic System] may not be fully or adequately functional in light of a hiring freeze,” he said — referring to what he described as the Coast Guard’s “FAA-like traffic control operation.”

“If this were the case, the Brooklyn Bridge accident would be a national harbinger, demanding immediate attention,” the pol said.

But there were no reports of any other ship being involved in any way in Saturday’s tragedy.

Sources have said the Mexican sailing ship Cuauhtemoc struck the bridge because a mechanical failure shut down its steering, leaving it at the mercy of East River currents that pulled the vessel into the historic bridge, killing two navy cadets and injuring at least 17 others.

In a press release Sunday, the Coast Guard also said it responded to the scene of the deadly collision immediately upon being notified, in keeping with its designated mission.

Really!

I remember years ago his wife was in charge of some maritime outfit there in New York City when a boat crashed into the dock or something. Of course, nothing ever happened to her, and she was hardly mentioned in relation to this incident. Obviously!

The skipper should know the mast height, tides and long published bridge heights.

DOGE and or the Coast Guard had nothing to do with his incompetence

I think it was the fault of Trump’s border control. If the border was still open, the crew of that ship would have claimed asylum leaving it abandoned in its dock. With no one to crew it, it would have stayed until it rotted and was sold to Lumber Liquidators to be made into rustic floors for liberals and been installed by those very same sailors.

Yes. They’re probably getting wind of big political bombs that may soon be dropped on democrats from embedded moles.

The captain either didn’t know how tall his boat was, or didn’t know how high the bridge was. Nothing to do with DOGE, you schmuck.

Definitely Trump’s fault. Just like snowstorms, heat waves, bad garbage collection in Newark, N.J.,and Venezuelan gangs crossing our border. Don’t you read the news?

Other reports say it had been docked at Pier 17 in Manhattan which is south of the bridge. They were backing out to go to sea and had mechanical problems. I heard that either the engine died and the tide took them north or the transmission broke and they couldn't change to forward. Either way the captain never planned to cross under the bridge.

I am more impressed with sailors who did this before engines with just the wind. No wonder ships could be stuck in port for weeks waiting for winds and the tide.
